After opening the season with a 1-2 showing, McKinney ISD teams will return to the field this week and attempt to sway that record with a full slate of wins. McKinney Boyd and McKinney North will be after their first wins of the season when they take on Coppell and Prosper, respectively, while McKinney will look to make it two in a row when it hosts Frisco Heritage.

Boyd vs. Coppell

Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Coppell

After opening the season with a 38-20 loss to Mesquite Horn, the Broncos will continue their difficult pre-district schedule Friday when they travel to Coppell. After missing the playoffs last year, the Cowboys got their new campaign off to a powerful start last week with a 41-8 pummeling of Longview, which entered the season ranked as the No. 9 Class 5A team in the state by the Associated Press.

“It doesn't get any easier,” said Don Drake, Boyd head football coach. “Coppell is a quality football team, no doubt. I've watched that game several times over the last few days. We've got our hands full this week, but I knew that going in. It's no surprise.”

Coppell pitched a shutout for most of three quarters against Longview, scoring 34 unanswered points in the process. Senior quarterback Colby Mahon threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns on 9-of-11 passing (81 percent). The bulk of that yardage went to senior receiver Cameron Smith, who caught four passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns.

Coppell victimized the Longview defense with massive reception after massive reception. Mahon accumulated the bulk of his passing yards on 36, 61 and 90-yard touchdown connections. The Cowboys racked up 410 yards on the night and allowed just 216 yards.

The Broncos counter with an experienced secondary that includes returning corners Chris Stanton and Robert Noren and returning safety Daylon Markham, who tied for a team-high 16 tackles with linebacker Adam Kimm last week against Horn.

McKinney vs. Frisco Heritage

Thursday, 7:30 p.m. at Ron Poe Stadium

McKinney snapped an 11-game losing streak with last week's 55-46 win against Mansfield Legacy. The Lions will look to build a winning streak Thursday when they host Frisco Heritage at Ron Poe Stadium for their first home game of the season.

“They're a good football team,” said Jeff Smith, McKinney head football coach. “They're very well-coached. They run a 4-3 on defense and their front four are very good, very active and athletic. They have some good defensive backs and are more mature on defense than they are on offense. They have a lot of returners on that side of the ball. It will be a good challenge.”

Heritage opened its season with a 53-14 drubbing at the hands of Lovejoy. The Coyotes gave up 27 points in the first quarter alone on a sequence of big plays that included 27 and 74-yard touchdown passes, a 53-yard touchdown rush and a 55-yard punt return.

Heritage allowed an average of seven yards per rushing attempt and 13 yards per pass, which doesn't bode well against a McKinney offense that showed plenty of big-play potential against Legacy in a 625-yard performance.

On offense, the Coyotes rely on dual-threat quarterback Twayne Blackwell, who threw for 115 yards and two interceptions on 16-of-29 passing (55 percent) against Lovejoy and rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns on 17 attempts.

McKinney's defense will be looking to rebound against Heritage after surrendering 500 yards last week and almost allowing Legacy to stage a comeback with a 25-point fourth quarter. But the Lions offense answered with a 20-point fourth quarter to close out the win.

North vs. Prosper

Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Ron Poe Stadium

The Bulldogs opened the season with a disappointing 21-17 loss to Carrollton Newman Smith that saw them cede a 17-0 halftime lead across the second half. They'll look to fare better Friday when they host Prosper in their home opener at Ron Poe Stadium.

Prosper is coming off a 39-21 season-opening win against Keller that saw impressive contributions from its offense and defense. The Eagles wasted no time putting the game away with a 32-point first quarter in which they came up with two defensive scores on a fumble recovery in the end zone and a 40-yard interception return.

The hard-hitting Prosper defense had that interception and forced six fumbles against Keller, recovering three. They shutout Keller in the second half and decimated its running game throughout the night, allowing less than 1.5 yards per carry.

On offense, the Eagles featured a multi-pronged rushing attack led by Marquez Houston, who rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Prosper had two other players, quarterback Davis Webb and Travis Tidmore, with as many carries or more against Keller and rushed for 246 yards as a team.

The Eagles will have to contend with a well-balanced attack against North, though. In his first varsity start, junior quarterback Ben Dutze threw for 200 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on 16-of-29 passing (55 percent) against Newman Smith, while junior running back Trey Smith posted a game-high 98 rushing yards on 23 carries.
