Flower Mound and Down: Former 8-5A rival surges back to defeat Lady Eagles in five

Published: Wednesday, September 12, 2012 2:15 PM CDT
Tuesday's match gave Allen volleyball a look at both the positive characteristics it hopes to continue and negative aspects it needs to abandon before district begins.

The Lady Eagles were solid with their digs and passes at times against Flower Mound, but also struggled with ball control and blocking at other points in the Lady Jaguars' eventual five-set victory (22-25, 25-16, 24-26, 25-8, 15-10).

"For us it is still a total team effort," said Kelley Gregoriew, Allen head coach, "Tonight that meant everyone contributed to the positive things that happened, but that also means everyone contributed to the things that went wrong. We'd like to see more consistency at this point and we need to finish out matches like these."

Flower Mound was the team that had trouble finishing in Game 3 as Allen faced a string of set points before going on a run that was sparked by multiple aces from senior Kelly Holden.

"We got a couple big blocks too and rolled with that momentum," Gregoriew said.

Allen's 26-24 win in Game 3 and 25-22 victory in Game 1 had common themes.

"We were passing well and digging well in those games," Gregoriew said. "We were also good on the block."

Game 4 left a little more to be desired.

"We just couldn't get our act together there," Gregoriew said.

With Flower Mound's Briana Allmon and Jordan Anderson causing chaos offensively by playing off the Allen block, the Lady Jags picked up a 25-8 win which, when paired with their 25-16 victory in Game 2, forced a decisive fifth set. Game 5 would be significantly closer than the prior set with ties at 5-5, 6-6 and 8-8. Once more though, Flower Mound put up the necessary swings to win the game, 15-10, and the match.

The loss dropped the Lady Eagles to 17-11 on the season.

"When you go five you feel like it could have gone either way," Gregoriew said. "And that last game was close too."

Tuesday's match was Allen's first in a week as the team took off Friday for a film session and team bonding exercises. Friday would have normally been the start of district for the Lady Eagles, but a switch to six-team 10-5A means waiting until Sept. 21 to open district against Plano East.

"I thought the break was good," Gregoriew said. "And we were definitely productive with the down time."

Allen won't have any more down time prior to district, hosting defending Class 5A State Champion Coppell (which is ranked No. 3 in the state) at 5 p.m. Friday as part of Homecoming and welcoming Hebron at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before beginning the 10-5A slate.

And Allen has a set list of points to work on during that time.

"We've gotten away from a few things we did well early in the season," Gregoriew said. "Especially some of our hitters; they seem to be a little more hesitant with their swing, so we need to remind them that they are good and get that confidence back."
