Those willing to volunteer to help support upcoming events in McKinney should sign up now.

The events, which are quickly approaching, include the Wish 100 Bicycle Rally, the Believe! 2012 10K & 5K Run and 1-Mile Walk, and disaster-response training with the American Red Cross.

Volunteers are needed for the Wish 100 Bicycle Rally, set for Oct. 6. The event, sponsored by the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the city of McKinney, is a 60-mile bike ride through McKinney that raises funds to help make wishes come true for children who are battling life-threatening medical conditions. Volunteers are needed to fill the roles of course marshal, event greeters, trash collectors and table cleaners.

The Believe! event, set for Nov. 24 and sponsored by Main Street McKinney, benefits needy children in the area.

"What a wonderful opportunity for energetic families, groups and individuals to come and cheer participants," said Karen Lewis, a volunteer with the Volunteer McKinney organization.

Volunteers will help with the races in various ways from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., then may stay and enjoy the festivities of Dickens of a Christmas that afternoon downtown.

The American Red Cross provides free core training for volunteers who want to know how to help if a disaster should strike in the area.

The organization provides ongoing training. Volunteers may serve on an Action Team, and can choose to be on call days, evenings or weekends.

"If you want to make a difference but can't commit to the Action Team, you can still help by organizing a collection drive for personal toiletries for disaster victims," Lewis said.

For information about Red Cross volunteer opportunities, use the keywords "Red Cross" in a search on the Volunteer McKinney website.

To volunteer for any of the upcoming events, sign up at www.volunteermckinney.org, email volunteer@volunteermckinney.org, or call 972-543-0679.
