Frisco to spray areas following two new cases of WNV (updated)

Published: Thursday, August 30, 2012 5:30 PM CDT
Update: Frisco has announced a seventh confirmed case of West Nile virus. The story below has been updated to reflect the new case as well as an additional area of the city to be sprayed beginning Aug. 31 at 10 p.m. The original story only mentioning the sixth confirmed case was published on Aug. 29.

Two new cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in Frisco, bringing the total number of cases in the city to seven. The new confirmed cases come after the city council voted to opt out of Denton County's aerial spraying on Monday.

The city will make two more rounds of ground spraying as a result of the residents' confirmed cases. Frisco's West Nile virus response plan calls for ground spraying to take place in the general area surrounding a resident's home after he or she tests positive for the virus.

Neighborhoods near the intersection of Teel Parkway and Lebanon Road in Denton County will receive ground spraying beginning Aug. 31 at 10 p.m., and spraying will last until 6 a.m. Saturday. Neighborhoods near the intersection of F.M. 423 and Main Street will also be sprayed at this time.

City of Frisco officials urge residents to practice four precautionary steps outlined by Texas Department of State Health Services commonly referred to as the "Four D's." These precautionary steps are: drain all standing water, dress in long sleeve clothing when outdoors, use mosquito repellants containing DEET, and avoid outdoor activities during night and early morning hours when mosquitoes are most active.

Though Frisco is not participating in Denton County's aerial spraying, residents may see planes in the area around 9 p.m. Aug. 30 and 31. Some Frisco residents may mistakenly receive a call from Denton County regarding the spraying, city officials said.
