DSO presents Divine Dvorák

Published: Friday, September 28, 2012 4:39 PM CDT
Tickets are on sale now for Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) performances of Divine Dvorák, Oct. 18-21 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, 2301 Flora St. Dallas.

The performance features music director Jaap van Zweden and cello soloist Narek Hakhnazaryan in a program of music by Antonín Dvoák.

The program includes "Cello Concerto" and "Symphony No. 7."

"Only rarely do we have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in a single composer's work for an entire symphonic performance," said DSO program annotator Laurie Shulman. "Antonín Dvoák is one of the few who can bring beaming smiles to our faces, with orchestral music of sweep, drama, and the kind of memorable tunes that linger in the mind's ear for days afterward. His Cello Concerto is the instrument's great glory of the Romantic Era. Wonderfully melodic, soulful in its slow movement, and dancing with Czech rhythms in the finale, the concerto is a jewel. As for the Seventh Symphony: we'll let you in on a little secret. Among musicians, this one is the favorite. No, not the New World, no, not the tuneful Eighth. It's the Seventh. Don't miss the third movement furiant, which has nothing to do with fury and everything to do with Czech dance."

Be moved by the dramatic Cello Concerto by Czech composer, Antonín Dvorák and young star soloist Narek Hakhnazaryan. Throughout the piece, the cello is balanced by the rich sounds of the orchestra. The theme is revisited several times during the three movements. The second movement is a musical monument of Dvorák's sister-in-law, who became gravely ill near the start of his work on the concerto. The finale softly and elegantly closes the showpiece, until the last few measures when the sound grows into an exciting and beautiful ending.

Dvorák's Seventh Symphony is one of his most popular and emotional compositions. Movement is a Czech dance that lightens the mood of the symphony, before returning to its ominous state. In the final movement, Dvoák transforms the somber mood into a brilliant and thrilling conclusion.

Current ticket prices start at $21.
