Police are searching for suspects in connection with two overnight burglaries at Petland stores in Plano and Frisco.
Shortly after midnight Monday, two people broke into the Plano Petland at Coit Road and Mapleshade Lane, just north of the President George Bush Turnpike. Plano PD spokesman David Tilley said officers arrived on scene around 12:10 a.m. and found that the suspects had already left the building.
When an inventory of the store was completed, store employees identified seven missing dogs: a dachshund, a beagle, a shih tzu, an English bulldog, a soft-coated Wheaten terrier, a shih-poo (shih tzu and poodle cross) and a Boglen terrier (beagle and Boston terrier cross).
"They kicked in our door a little after 12:30 a.m.," said Josh Nie, Frisco Petland store manager. "Fortunately they grabbed only two English bulldogs -- a brother and sister about 9 weeks old."
Nie said in his 10 years with the company, he has never seen anything like this.
"Every two weeks I speak to hundreds of our stores across the nation and this just doesn't happen," Nie said. "They were on a mission."
One of the things Nie said he found confusing was the breeds taken, as well as the ones left behind.
"I think in Plano they went for random breeds," Nie said. "When I spoke to Lisa [Abair, Plano store manager] we were both a little baffled. We carry many more puppies here in Frisco and cater to a higher clientele. I was surprised when I got here that they left four bulldogs, mastiffs, yorkies and other high-end dogs. They took two dogs, but left a lot more."
Nie said all of the dogs are around 9 or 10 weeks old, so the company's main concern is the dogs' well being.
Anyone with information on the two robberies is asked to call Plano PD at 972-941-2148 or Frisco PD at 972-292-6200.
