Police searching for stolen puppies: Nine dogs taken overnight from Plano, Frisco Petland stores

Published: Tuesday, October 9, 2012 12:04 PM CDT
Police are searching for suspects in connection with two overnight burglaries at Petland stores in Plano and Frisco.

Shortly after midnight Monday, two people broke into the Plano Petland at Coit Road and Mapleshade Lane, just north of the President George Bush Turnpike. Plano PD spokesman David Tilley said officers arrived on scene around 12:10 a.m. and found the suspects had already left the building.

When an inventory of the store was completed, store employees identified seven missing dogs: a dachshund, beagle, shih tzu, English bulldog, soft-coated Wheaten terrier, shih-poo (shih tzu and poodle cross) and Boglen terrier (beagle and Boston terrier cross).

Video released by Plano PD shows the suspects moving in a hurried manner throughout the store and leaving about five minutes after the initial break-in. Once the suspects left the Plano location, they headed north to the Frisco Petland, located at 2930 Preston Road.

"They kicked in our door a little after 12:30 a.m.," said Josh Nie, Frisco Petland store manager. "Fortunately, they grabbed only two English bulldogs -- a brother and sister about 9 weeks old."

Nie said in his 10 years with the company, he has never seen anything like this.

"Every two weeks I speak to hundreds of our stores across the nation and this just doesn't happen," Nie said. "They were on a mission."

One of the things Nie said he found confusing was which breeds were taken, and which were left behind.

"I think in Plano they went for random breeds," Nie said. "When I spoke to Lisa [Abair, Plano store manager] we were both a little baffled. We carry many more puppies here in Frisco and cater to a higher clientele. I was surprised when I got here that they left four bulldogs, mastiffs, yorkies and other high-end dogs. They took two dogs, but left a lot more."

Nie said all of the dogs are about 9 or 10 weeks old, so the company's main concern is the dogs' well-being.

Anyone with information on the two robberies is asked to call Plano PD at 972-941-2148 or Frisco PD at 972-292-6200.

" Nothing could be more ironic than to hear a Petland manager call the dogs stolen from her store her "babies" the week after 92 puppy mill dogs were dumped in Denton County. No, ma'am, those aren't YOUR babies. They are your stock. They are the babies of mothers who live just like the dogs whose pictures you can see here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151128020592833.456557.58189042832&type=3

How many times do Petland and the Hunte Corporation have to be exposed as perpetuators of the puppy mill industry before people "get it" and stop buying from them? Google "hunte petland puppy mill" and see what you find.

Meanwhile, my only sympathies lie with the dogs who were stolen and their mothers and fathers back in the puppy mills they came from. Boo hoo to the stores who will simply replace them with more product. "
