Denton County Health Department confirms another of West Nile fever in Highland Village
From staff reports
The city of Highland Village received notice from the Denton County Health Department (DCHD) of a confirmed case of West Nile fever (WNF) in Highland Village. This brings the total to ten West Nile related cases in Highland Village; three WNND and seven West Nile fever. The Denton County Health Department reports a total of 182 confirmed cases in Denton County as of Oct. 11.
This is the first case since the city participated in the aerial mosquito control spraying conducted by Denton County Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Ground spraying operations began in selected neighborhoods July 5 and all neighborhoods within the city were completed Aug. 2. The city continues to spray specific areas as warranted, including fogging the underground drainage culverts which are only accessible by foot.
The city requests residents download the Eye on Highland Village app, by searching GoRequest in the iPhone store or Android market, and report areas of standing water, pools of water or potential mosquito breeding grounds so they City can address the issue.
* Drain standing water around their homes to reduce mosquito hatching grounds.
* Dress in pants and long sleeves when outside in mosquito-infested areas, but avoid becoming too hot.
* Apply an insect repellent that contains DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) to exposed skin and to clothing when outdoors.
* Stay indoors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
The city uses the larvicide tablet or Bti donut in public areas where there is standing water. You can purchase the larvicide tablet at local nurseries and hardware stores and place in your ponds and fountains.
