With the playoffs no longer in reach, Sunnyvale head coach John Settle said that he wanted to see his team build for next season.

The Raiders did just that on Friday, closing the season on a high note with a 38-12 victory over Howe.

Sunnyvale matches last year's record of 7-3, including a 3-3 mark in district play.

While the Raiders did not break through and make the playoffs for the first time in school history, there are plenty of reasons for optimism for 2013

Quarterback Ryan Cottingame threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns in the win. For the season, he completed 60 percent of his passes for 2,064 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Cottingame, a junior who will be returning next season, also rushed for 443 yards and five scores.

Another key returner will be wide receiver Josh Quinn, who caught 58 passes for 1,003 yards, an average of nearly 18 yards per carry, with 16 touchdowns.

Running back Abdul Khalaf, a sophomore, rushed for more than 500 yards and five touchdowns and makes up a trio of offensive standouts that will help make the Raiders a force next season.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sunnyvale improved to 2-0 on the young season on Tuesday with a 56-40 victory over Pottsboro.

The Raiders led by one after the first quarter but stretched that advantage to 32-26 by halftime.

Pottsboro hung around through three quarters, but Sunnyvale closed the game with a 16-5 run to put it away.

Sheridan Lewis led all scorers with 20 points, while Grace Goodhart and Caila Sims each chipped in with 13 points.

The Raiders had been coming off a season-opening 60-23 blowout win over Nevada Community on Saturday.

Goodhart led the way with 18 points, while Sims and Lewis added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Sunnyvale led 23-11 at half then blew the game open with a 25-3 run in the third quarter.

The Raiders will host Canton on Friday and then play back-to-back games on consecutive days, traveling to play Kaufman on Monday and then taking on Malakoff at home on Tuesday.
