Hedrick Elementary completes 2012 monster mile challenge
From staff reports
During the month of October, students at Hedrick Elementary School participated in a Monster Mile Challenge to help educate students on healthy living. Hedrick students and staff committed to the challenge with a $5 contribution that will help purchase technology for the campus.
"Each day students faced a new challenge. The tasks all related to healthy eating, healthy living and character building," said Kelly Roden, Hedrick assistant principal. "We want to help encourage our students become well rounded individuals who can make smart, independent choices when it comes to daily living."
In classrooms, teachers used a variety of health related information in their lessons to help students make cross-content learning connections to healthy living, math, reading and science. The school also used this as an activity to help students make connections with Lewisville High School, where they will eventually attend. LHS athletes visited throughout the month to work with the kids on different sports-related physical skills and discuss sports dynamics including the physical and academic commitments they make in order to be successful.
The challenge culminated on race day, Oct. 31. Teachers and parents, as well as LHS cheerleaders and the Lady Farmer soccer team, accompanied the racers for an extra dose of encouragement and inspiration.
In the end, students are better educated about healthy-living and the school raised more than $2,200 to help purchase technology that will be used by students.
