Lewisville police shoot, kill man

Lewisville police officers shot and killed a man Wednesday night, who officials say was pointing his own gun in a threatening way to the officers.
Roger Preston Hamill, 31, of Durant, Okla. was taken to Medical Center of Lewisville following the incident, died around 11 p.m. No officers were hurt, but the Texas Rangers will investigate the incident.
"The suspect did not fire any shots at the officers, but he raised his weapon, in a threatening manner, at the officers," said Capt. Kevin Deaver. "The Texas Rangers will now investigate the shooting."
Wednesday night's incident began around 10:20 p.m. Lewisville police officers responded to a 911 call by employees of McDonald's restaurant across from Vista Ridge Mall. Employees reported seeing a man walk up to a vehicle in the drive-thru lane and threaten the occupants with a gun. Police do not believe there is any relations of Hamill to the person he threatened.
The female employee gave police a detailed description Hamill and the vehicle he was seen leaving in. She also pointed police in the direction he was seen leaving.
Deaver said three Lewisville police officers located Hamill's vehicle in the same shopping center as the restaurant and attempted what is called a "known-risk stop" on the vehicle.
"Hamill exited the vehicle with a handgun in his hand. After being ordered to drop the weapon repeatedly, Hamill raised the weapon in a threatening manner. Officers fired their service weapons and shot Hamill," Deaver said. "We're not releasing how many times Hamill was shot."
Deaver also said it's unclear how many officers fired their weapon, but that is something the Texas Rangers will investigate.
"It would be speculation to say anything about what might have been Hamill's motive. The Texas Rangers will look into what he may have been dealing with at the time of the shooting," Deaver said.
Deaver said police of "kind of" ruled out that Hamill was involved in the robbery of a Carrollton Wendy's 20 minutes prior to the incident, but it's still a possibility. Hamill does not have a record with the Lewisville Police Department, according to police records.
All three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave with pay. Deaver said it has been a while since the last officer involved fatal shooting. He said the last one he remembers was at least 10 years ago.
