West side: Senior third baseman inks with Tarleton State

Published: Sunday, November 18, 2012 5:53 PM CST
CELINA -- The Celina softball team will have a much different look this season after losing multiple key seniors from last year's team.

However, one constant for the Lady Bobcats will be senior third baseman Miranda West, who is slated to be Celina's new leadoff hitter and defensive stalwart.

"This is the first time I haven't had a Knowles at leadoff," said Billy Coleman, Celina head coach.

While West may be the constant in Celina's lineup during the 2012-13 season, her constant has been the game itself. That's why the senior chose to continue her softball career after high school, inking a letter of intent with Tarleton State University last Wednesday.

"I knew I wanted to keep playing my whole life," West said. "When I was little I always looked up to the girls on varsity."

West verbally committed with the Texans on Jan. 21 but made it official Wednesday at the Celina library with a ceremony in front of friends and family.

"I'm very excited," West said. "I don't really have words to describe it."

Coleman said Tarleton head coach Julie Mata will be adding a reliable player to her program next season.

"[West] is a little fire ball," he said. "She's probably the player I ride the hardest and chew out the most because I expect so much from her and know what she can do."

West chose the Texans as her new team after a visit to Stephenville in which one thing in particular stood out.

"The traditions there really caught my eye," she said. "It was a lot like Celina, which I liked."

The senior plans to become a graduate assistant at Tarleton in addition to continuing her career on the diamond. With Wednesday's signing now out of the way, West can focus more attention to her favorite game.

"It kind of took all the stress away," West said. "I'll actually be able to enjoy my senior season now."

Coleman echoed those sentiments from a coaching standpoint.

"It makes them have more focus because they don't have to press as much when they already have it out of the way," he said.

West and the Lady Bobcats will begin practicing for the new season on Jan. 23 with Celina's first scrimmage set for Jan. 31.

"[West] is definitely the best third baseman to ever play for Celina," Coleman said.
