Chargers have no problems knocking off Grace Prep for a second time

Published: Monday, November 19, 2012 4:47 PM CST
The old saying goes that it is difficult to beat the same team twice in one season.

That was not an issue for Dallas Christian.

The Chargers dispatched Arlington Grace Prep on Friday in a 38-6 victory in a TAPPS Division II playoff game at Charger Stadium.

Dallas Christian, which defeated Grace Prep 42-7 earlier in the season, remained perfect on the season at 11-0 and will face Fort Worth Christian in the Division II quarterfinals on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at UTA's Maverick Stadium.

Ironically, the Chargers also faced the Cardinals earlier this season the week after the Grace Prep contest. Dallas Christian won the first meeting with Fort Worth Christian, 41-7.

The Chargers had a little tougher time on Friday against Grace Prep. They got a 28-yard touchdown run from Justis Nelson and a 9-yard scoring strike from Alex Craig to Hayden Baker, but the lead was only 14-0 at halftime.

That advantage swelled to three touchdowns when Craig found Nelson open on a 37-yard touchdown, but Grace Prep refused to go away, as Nate Hodapp broke free for a 70-yard scoring run to close to within 21-6.

It was all Dallas Christian from there.

Craig threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Baker late in the third quarter and that duo hooked up again earlier in the fourth, this time on a 21-yard score, to make it 35-6. Jarrod Collins tacked on a late field goal to provide the final margin.

The Chargers will now be heavy favorites once again against a Fort Worth Christian team they had little trouble with the first time around.

Craig, who passed the 2,000-yard mark on the season, had three touchdown passes in the first meeting and has 26 on the season.

D'Andre Cannon had a rare off game last week, but is still averaging better than nine yards per carry with 22 touchdowns on the year.

The Cardinals will have to do a better job not only slowing down the Chargers, but moving the ball. In the first meeting, Fort Worth Christian completed only one pass and managed only 161 yards of total offense.
