Published: Tuesday, November 6, 2012 11:12 PM CST
President Barack Obama won re-election Tuesday night by narrowly defeating Gov. Mitt Romney.

Also Tuesday, incumbent legislators from the area overwhelmingly won re-election.

Congressman Michael Burgess (R-Lewisville) won the race for U.S. Representative District 26. The incumbent has secured 69.9 percent of the votes compared to Democrat David Sanchez (27.48 percent) and Libertarian Mark Boler (2.59 percent) with 42 percent of the precincts reported.

State Senator Jane Nelson (R-Flower Mound) won the District 12 race over Libertarian John Betts with 84.52 percent of the votes with 56 percent of the precincts reported.

"I will work every day to earn the trust the voters have placed in me, and I will continue to fight for the priorities of our community," Nelson said. "Together we have built a Texas economy that is the envy of the nation. We must protect our economic strength as we work to create jobs, improve education, streamline health and human services, and address transportation and other local priorities."

State Rep. Tan Parker (R-Flower Mound) defeated Libertarian Bruce Hermann with 86.62 percent of the votes with 38 percent of the precincts reported.

"I am honored and humbled to have earned such overwhelming support from District 63 to continue my service in the Texas House of Representatives," Parker said. "The message sent tonight is loud and clear. Denton County is looking for strong, conservative leadership to continue to balance the state budget, keep our taxes low and ensure that we remain a pro-growth, pro-business state that will lead this nation out of this economic recession."

In the newly created District 65, Ron Simmons (R-Carrollton) secured 60.97 percent of the votes to lead Democrat Gary Brown (37.23 percent) and Green Party candidate Alex Mendoza (1.79 percent) with 13 percent of the precincts reported.
