United Way seeking Volunteers for Vita program
United Way of Denton County and Little Elm ISD are partnering for the second consecutive year to provide tax preparation help to low and moderate-income families and individuals through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
The program offers free tax preparation and e-filing services from volunteers certified and trained by the IRS to people making $50,000 or less annually. The program begins January 28th and will offer assistance Mondays at Hackberry Elementary and Thursdays at Oak Point Elementary through April during days the school is open. Volunteer orientation sessions will take place December 6th and 11th.
Recreation Center open day after Thanksgiving
While the administrative offices of the Town of Little Elm will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and the day after, the newly-christened Little Elm Recreation Center will open its doors on Friday, according to Director of Parks and Recreation Tony Chrisman.
"We're holding a modified schedule on the Friday after Thanksgiving, unlocking our doors at 8 a.m. We want to give people a chance to work off some of the holiday feast, he said, and we're probably going to host those folks who would rather not be at the shopping malls on that day."
The Center's modified Friday hours will end with closing at 8 p.m. It will resume its normal operating hours on Saturday, opening at 9 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m. Sunday's hours are noon to 6 p.m. and regular hours on Monday through Thursday are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Normal Friday hours are from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Little Elm Cheerleader to perform in Houston's Thanksgiving Parade
Shelbie Rhodes a seventh-grade cheerleader from Lakeside Middle School was one of more than 300 elementary, junior high and high school cheerleaders and dancers from across the U.S. who performed in the 62nd H-E-B Holiday Parade on Thanksgiving Day in Houston.
Rhodes is one of two Lakeside cheerleaders who participated in the parade. In addition to cheerleading, Rhodes is involved in school volleyball and basketball and is on the A-B honor roll. Heather Waleri, another Lakeside cheerleader, also performed in the parade.
The individuals invited to perform in the parade are cheerleading and dance All-Americans selected from summer camps throughout the country. All-Americans were selected via tryout based on the cheerleading or dance skills they showed at camp.
Rhodes will perform with the Varsity All-American group in the annual Thanksgiving Day festivities through the heart of downtown Houston for thousands of spectators lining the parade route. The event is televised in the Houston area and syndicated throughout the U.S.
