Quick turnaround: Rangers bounce back from loss to rout Sanger

Published: Thursday, October 11, 2012 3:04 PM CDT
FRISCO – Lone Star used a quick start in Friday night's game against Sanger to avoid a two-game losing streak heading into district play on Thursday.

The Rangers rebounded from a 33-28 loss to Anna last week by dismantling Sanger, 51-21, on Homecoming night from FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco.

"We were good offensively in the first half," said Phil Fuller, Lone Star head coach. "We scored on every possession in that first quarter and we were really balanced."

Lone Star used a quick start to build a 28-7 first-quarter lead that would prove to be too much for Sanger to overcome.

Sanger didn't help matters by junior quarterback Wyatt Broxson coughing the ball up on the game's opening drive, with Lone Star recovering the ball to set up a shortened field.

Senior quarterback Will Campbell made the Indians pay for the mistake, throwing a 22-yard strike to receiver Toure Stevens for a touchdown to give the Rangers a 7-0 lead at the 10:09 mark of the first quarter.

Sanger answered back with a scoring drive of its own on the ensuing possession, using a 33-yard pass from Broxson to junior receiver Brennan Bloom to reach the end zone and knot the score at 7-7.

However, Lone Star clamped down for the final 18-plus minutes of the half and poured on 30 unanswered points following the Bloom touchdown.

"We didn't start that well defensively," Fuller said. "They had a little momentum after that touchdown and we were able to stop that pretty fast."

The first of three unanswered touchdowns came courtesy of running back Jordan Jones, who sprinted 55 yards for the score.

"[Jones] is an excellent running back," Fuller said. "He has some good size and some good speed."

Jones, who finished the game with 105 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries while also catching four passes for 82 yards, got the bulk of Lone Star's carries with starting running back Ramon Harris still hobbled with an ankle injury.

"[Harris] is still a little gimpy," Fuller said. "Ankle injuries can be a tough thing."

Harris carried the ball just two times in the game, finishing with 12 yards.

Lone Star's offense had plenty of help from the passing game though. Campbell made Sanger pay for a missed field goal by kicker Kyle Johnson and connected with Stevens on a 33-yard touchdown pass at the 2:28 mark of the first to give the Rangers a 21-7 advantage.

Campbell didn't stop there, finding receiver Jordan Ruby for an 8-yard touchdown with 15 seconds left in the frame, giving Lone Star a 28-7 lead after the opening quarter.

"[Campbell] had a really good game," Fuller said. "He was accurate and made some good throws and did what he needed to do."

The Lone Star signal caller finished the night with 183 yards, three touchdowns and one interception after completing 13-of-17 pass attempts.

The Rangers widened their lead midway through the second quarter when Broxson was sacked in the end zone for a safety, making it a 30-7 affair.

It took the Lone Star offense just 27 seconds to find the end zone once again, with Campbell keeping the ball on a zone-read play and taking it 20 yards for a score.

The 37-7 lead would hold for the final six-plus minutes and the Rangers carried the 30-point lead into the locker room.

Despite Campbell losing a fumble on his team's opening drive of the second half, the Rangers didn't take long to pad their lead after cornerback Sonny Maze intercepted a pass from Sanger's Brandon Mann and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown and a 44-7 Lone Star advantage.

Having gone more than 28 minutes since their first score of the game, the Indians finally found the end zone again at the 2:00 mark of the third when junior running back Dylan Hennen punched it in from 4 yards away.

Sanger completed its scoring minutes later when Mann hit Bloom for a 12-yard touchdown strike, trimming the deficit to 44-21 with 9:24 left in the game.

The Rangers then added a 4-yard touchdown from running back Austin DeLeon less than two minutes later to end the game's scoring and give Lone Star a 51-21 victory.

"The guys got the bearings down there in the second half," Fuller said.

The win improved Lone Star to 5-1 on the season with a Thursday matchup against Aubrey opening District 10-3A action.

"It's going to be a huge game," Fuller said. "Our district only plays four games so each game becomes really important."

The two teams are slated for a 7 p.m. kick off from FC Dallas Stadium.
