The Bronco Express: Boyd sweeps Naaman Forest in area final

Published: Saturday, November 3, 2012 2:18 AM CDT
PLANO -- The beat goes on.

The McKinney Boyd volleyball team swiftly handed Naaman Forest an impressive 64-minute, three-set sweep (25-8, 25-15, 25-20) in the area final round Friday night from Plano East.

"I am very pleased with how well these girls have played," said Kelly Quinn, Boyd head coach. "This is a very veteran playoff team, so I knew they'd be prepared. It's great coaching teams like this because they know what is expected of them, they are always mentally ready to go."

The Lady Broncos (34-7) return to action in the regional quarterfinals Tuesday night against Plano West at the Garland Special Events Center.

Megan Mollett led the Lady Broncos with 13 kills, followed by Krista Bukovec's seven. Kaley Seaber had a game-high 16 digs, followed by Kelly Koop, who contributed with eight of her own.

"I was impressed with Megan Mollett, she did awesome," Quinn said. "Krista Bukovec also had a great game and so did Kaley Seaber, too."

Quinn said the team was able to achieve the lightning-fast tempo due to scaled back practices.

"We played very crisp. I'm very excited by how well we played," she said. "We tapered back our practices, so I think that gave us more energy. The energy in general in the match was very good."

With only 16 teams left in the entire state playoff picture, Quinn knows the competition will only get tougher.

"From here on out it's going to be a full on dog fight every set, so we have to be ready," she said. "There aren't any more easy matches."

Despite the quick and easy second-round sweep, Quinn admits there are still areas her team needs to improve on.

"We need to continue to improve on choosing shot selection during the long rallies," she said. "I think that's one thing we always go back to what's comfortable and choosing to stay focused during those long rallies."

Friday night's victory, while quick, was still very much a complete team effort.

"Both of our middles played great, Krista Bukovec and Emma Meyer," Quinn said. "Lauren Petrisin, she also contributed a lot and so did our setters Tori Turck and Parker Shepherd."

With two playoff rounds down, the Lady Broncos moved forward with their goal of returning to the state finals.

"After the game I told them the number is now down to five," Quinn said. "Just five more matches before the state championship."

Next up is West, a team Boyd knows quite well. The district rivals have played each other twice this season, splitting the two meetings as the Lady Wolves are the only district rival to have beaten the Lady Broncos this year.

"I hope we take away from this that the first two rounds are over and done with and now the real competition is beginning with a lot of great teams ahead," Quinn said. "We have to take that momentum that we gained in the first two matches as we now take on more challenging teams, so we have to be ready."
