Stayin’ Alive: North tops Greenville, keeps playoff hopes intact

Published: Saturday, October 27, 2012 2:34 AM CDT
GREENVILLE – When push came to shove, the McKinney North Bulldogs shoved back.

North needed a win to keep its playoffs chances alive and the Bulldogs got it Friday night in a 31-6 showing on the road against district rival Greenville from T.A. Cotton Ford Stadium.

“I told them after the game this is what we had to do tonight, we had to keep ourselves in it,” said Mike Fecci, North head coach.“We got to win out and we took the first step towards that tonight.”

North improves to 2-6 on the season and 2-3 in District 13-4A action while Greenville drops to 0-8 and 0-5 in district play.

Fecci was pleased by what he saw as a complete team effort.

“We played pretty well,” he said. “We forced a lot of turnovers and ran the ball very effectively and threw the ball pretty well as well.”

Ronald Jones led North with two touchdowns on eight touches for 121 yards.Justin Jones also passed the century rushing mark with 107 yards on 15 carries with one touchdown.

As for their air attack, Bulldogs quarterback Ben Dutze finished 12-of-16 with 75 yards with one interception.

“Both of our backs, Justin Jones and Ronald Jones, had big nights for us,” Fecci said. “And Dutze threw the ball real well tonight. He had an interception, but it was on a deflection, a ball we should have caught.”

The Bulldogs defense also shined, holding their opponent to only six points, which didn’t come until the fourth quarter.

“Our defensive line played real well,” Fecci said. “Especially our defensive ends, they did a great job.”

Fecci was not only impressed by his starters, but also be the strong effort from his backups, whom he gave extended playing time to in the fourth quarter.

“The character they showed tonight was big,” Fecci said. “The whole team showed it. We put some backup kids in and defensively they refused to let them score and even forced an interception. Our kids played with great character and great class. I was proud of them for that.”

As the Bulldogs prepare for next week’s game at Wylie East, Fecci was thoroughly encouraged by what he saw from his squad Friday night.

“We had a really good week of practice, great mental and physical preparation for this game and we were able to come out and have a positive outcome this Friday,” he said. “And hopefully we’ll come out and do it again next week and give ourselves a chance.”
