10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wranglers take two of three at Hoopfest
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
In preparation for what it hopes is a long playoff run three months from now, West Mesquite is challenging itself early on in the season.
That continued last weekend when the Wranglers competed in the three-day Allen Lady Eagle Hoopfest.
West Mesquite held its own at the event, winning two of its three games, including a 57-47 victory over Irving MacArthur to close the tournament on Saturday.
But West Mesquite got untracked in the third quarter, using a 25-14 run to take the lead and they pulled away from there.
Alexis Jordan led all scorers with 18 points, while Alexus Bertrand and Jazmyne Walker added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
On Friday, the Wranglers got 22 points from Regina Garrett and 10 from Jordan but it was not enough in a 65-50 loss to Skyline.
The two teams were even after the first quarter, but the difference was the middle stages, where the Raiders outscored West Mesquite 31-17 to take control.
The Wranglers had opened the tournament on Thursday with a 57-39 victory over Lewisville.
West Mesquite used a 14-5 run in the second quarter to take a double-digit lead and the Farmers were never able to get any closer.
The Wranglers had a quartet of players in double figures, as Garrett scored 12, Bertrand and Leah Hamilton had 11 and Claudia Price chipped with 10.
West Mesquite scheduled to play home games during the week of Thanksgiving against Horn on Monday and Lakeview on Tuesday before a tough challenge at DeSoto on Tuesday.
Poteet slipped to 2-5 on the season with a 56-37 loss to Rockwall in non-district play on Friday.
The Pirates got out of the gates slowly with just four points in the first quarter, but were still within striking distance at 23-15 at halftime. However, the Yellow Jackets opened the second half with a 22-11 spurt and that proved to be too much to overcome.
Shyari Cheathem was the only player in double figures for Poteet with 15 points. Kelsey Stewart scored seven, while Brooke Bush added five.
The Pirates were slated to play Rockwall-Heath this past Tuesday and then have a short travel on Tuesday to play at North Mesquite.
