Softball: Injury puts Lady Cougars behind the eight-ball in bi-district loss

Published: Tuesday, May 1, 2012 4:11 PM CDT
A young roster and a bevy of preseason injuries thrust The Colony pitcher Lindsay Jacobs into the limelight this year and the freshman delivered, leading the Lady Cougars to a third-place finish in District 4-4A and second consecutive appearance in the playoffs where the squad got a rematch against Wolfforth Frenship, which had swept The Colony in the same round last year.

And while the Lady Cougars entered the series optimistic, an injury to Jacobs early in Game 1 forced The Colony's ace out of action and the squad never really recovered coming up short in Game 1, 9-3, before bowing out Saturday in Game 2, 3-1.

Jacobs was injured in the second inning Friday when she was cut by the spikes of a Frenship player who slid in high on a play at second base and missed the rest of the game before returning to the circle for an effective performance Saturday.

"It's tough to lose your ace," said Deana Coleman, The Colony coach. "And then you have to bring in a pitcher who isn't totally warmed up. That really hurt us."

Despite outhitting Frenship, 8-6, The Colony was unable to keep pace on the scoreboard as Frenship took advantage of 11 walks.

Offensively, the Lady Cougars posted both of their runs in one inning, when they received a double from Jocelyn Ward, an RBI single by Sarah Wiseman and a run-scoring double from Tori Hawk.

Jacobs returned and was in form Saturday, allowing five hits with one walk and a hit batter.

But while Frenship was opportunistic, scoring three times on just seven runners, The Colony posted just one run on its seven hits.

"We just couldn't get the big hit at the right time," Coleman said. "We had times when we had runners on and hot hitters coming up, but we either didn't get the bunt down or move runners around, or we couldn't get a two-out hit."

Twice The Colony left the bases loaded. In the bottom of the seventh with the Lady Cougars trailing, 3-1, The Colony had runners at first and second with nobody out but couldn't push across any runs, including ending the game on a well-hit liner to center by Hawk.

The Lady Cougars were cross the plate early in the contest when Wiseman reached on a single, stole second and came around to score on a double by Hawk.

Despite falling in the bi-district round to Frenship for a second consecutive season, The Colony continues to gain valuable experience for a youthful core.

"We have the whole team back," Coleman said. "We won't be in the same region, but we'll be in a tougher district, so we'll be prepared again when we get to the playoffs and hopefully the two years of playoff experience these girls have already gotten will make a difference."

Baseball: Cougars finish strong

While The Colony's baseball team knew it wouldn't be headed to the postseason, the Cougars still managed to close the regular season on positive note Friday when it defeated Denton in both teams District 9-4A finales, 3-2.

Parker Jones picked up the win on the bump for The Colony.
