West Mesquite, Frisco Centennial meet in a first-round marquee match-up

In its two biggest games of the 10-4A season, West Mesquite showed how much it has grown.
The Wranglers blew a 21-7 lead to Highland Park when the Scots scored 35 unanswered points to secure a 42-21 victory.
Just three weeks later, West Mesquite took on Poteet and flipped the script, rallying from two touchdowns down by scoring the final 28 points in a 45-31 win.
"I'm real happy where we are," West Mesquite head coach Mike Overton said. "We know it is going to be a good challenge in Frisco Centennial, but if we play the way we have been lately, I feel good about it."
Chason Virgil has followed up where he started after his freshman season was cut short by injury. The sophomore has thrown for more than 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Raashaan Reason is averaging nearly seven yards per carry and has 10 scores, while William Stanley, Akilian Butler and Christian Mitchell are just part of a deep receiving corps.
The defense has also been stout in recent weeks, led by Kameron Miles, Nick Akins, Nathaniel Roseburrow, Andre Thompson and Cedric Butler.
West Mesquite had allowed just seven points against Carrollton Newman Smith and North Forney, and held the Pirates to a field goal in the second half a week ago.
If the Wranglers are to advance, they will need a similar effort on Friday against a Frisco Centennial team that has only one blemish-a 38-36 loss to Prosper.
The Titans have an explosive quarterback in Arkansas-commitment Lamar Jordan. The senior has thrown for 1,847 yards and 22 touchdowns with only four interceptions. He can also be effective on the ground, rushing for more than 400 yards.
Chris Johnson leads the team in rushing, while Cody Bagwell and Stoney Hawkins are part of a deep receiving corps.
The Frisco Centennial defense is allowing only 15.6 points per game, which has made for some comfortable fourth quarters.
With the exception of the loss to Prosper and a 24-20 win over Frisco Wakeland, the Titans' remaining eight games have all been decided by at least 14 points.
