Plano West defeats South Garland, 37-27

Scream wins 10U fall title

The third time proved to be the charm for the Plano Youth Soccer Association's Team Scream.

After losing two straight finals, the 10U girls captured the fall title with wins of 4-0, 5-1 and 4-1.

After finishing the regular season at 8-2 (third place), the Scream faced a difficult path to the championship. In the semifinals, the Scream played a team it had not beaten in eight previous attempts, including the past two finals.

But that trend changed and the Scream moved to the championship against the Cheetahs. In the finals, the Scream broke open a 1-1 tie with a hat trick from Lauren Rosas in a four-minute span to take a 4-1 lead and secure the team's first title.

The Scream was started by Duane Newman when the girls were 3 and 4 years old.

"This just goes to show what can happen if you create a fun, family environment while instilling the basics of soccer," Newman said.

The Scream will next be in the North Texas Soccer Association's Tournament of Champions.

"We are always pushing the girls to play their best," said Keith Dlott, Scream assistant coach, "focusing on the foundation and challenging them to improve with every practice and game."

Lady Wolves remain unbeaten

At 10-0, the Plano West girls basketball team is off to the best start in program history.

Maybe.

"I think it is," said Don Patterson, West head coach. "I've been trying to go through some of the old stuff, shirts, plaques and all that to see, but I'm pretty sure this is our best start."

Record or no, the Lady Wolves have dominated.

The team has won seven games by double digits with five of those victories by at least 20 points.

West, which won the Lady Eagle Hoopfest last weekend, started the season at No. 8 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 5A state poll and has since risen to No. 3.

"This group just has a knack for finding a way to win," Patterson said. "The girls have been playing very well, but even when they don't have their best game, they continue to fight. These girls work hard and deserve the success they've had so far."

West is back in action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road against Rowlett.

Taylor Webb Classic approaches

With its first tournament (Rockwall-Heath) in the books, first year-head coach Jay Pryor and the Plano Senior wrestling team continues to look forward to its host tourney, the Taylor Webb Classic.

Named after the Plano ISD wrestling luminary, the tournament is set for Dec. 15.

This is the seventh edition of the event.

Arlington won the 15-team tournament last season with Plano West in second, Plano placing third and Plano East finishing fifth.

Mitchell up for Army P.O.Y.

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl has nominated 16 seniors for the 2013 U.S. Army Player of the Year Award and Prestonwood Christian Academy senior linebacker Mike Mitchell is one of those semifinalists.

The six finalists will be announced Nov. 28.

Mitchell is the lone semifinalist from Texas.

"U.S. Army All-American Bowl players possess a mental, emotional and physical strength like no other," said John Myers, director of strategic communications for U.S. Army Marketing and Research Group. "And these 16 finalists have distinguished themselves even further through their on-field leadership."

Winners of the award in the past decade include Adrian Peterson, Jimmy Clausen and Terrelle Pryor.

The U.S. Army Player of the Year will be given the Ken Hall Trophy during the awards dinner on Jan. 4 in San Antonio.

Winter Games of Texas near

For the eighth year in a row, The Winter Games of Texas (the state's largest multi-sport amateur competition) is coming to Collin County.

DFW Coaches clinic

High school coaches have a chance to learn from their own.

On Jan. 23-25, Embassy Suites Outdoor World at DFW Airport will be the site of a DFW Coaches Clinic, featuring a litany of high school coaches as speakers.

Sixteen 50-minute lectures will be given by the coaches on hand, with attendees slated to enjoy a Friday night "Chalk Talk" and dinner with one of the state's top offensive or defensive minds.

There will also be a Texas Hold-Em tournament on Friday, an FCA lecture on Saturday, plus a $1,000 cash prize up for grabs after the last lecture on Sunday.

The clinic's registration fee is $70 if mailed in by Jan. 18 and $80 afterwards. To pre-register, visit the clinic website at coachesclinic.net.

Get Golf Ready coming to Plano

Women looking to learn about or hone their golf game are in luck.

Now under way, and running through Dec. 13, the PGA Tour Superstore in Plano will be offering a women's Get Golf Ready program. An alternative means of learning the ins and outs of the game, Get Golf Ready consists of five lessons taught by a PGA professional, starting at $99.

The PGA Tour Superstore is located at 8700 Preston Road.

Landry Award nominations

For the third straight year, North Texas GMC Dealers will present the area's top high school football player with The Landry Award.

The honor recognizes the Metroplex's top high school player. The recipient will be chosen by a voting panel of former coaches and players, media members and local leaders. The Landry Award program will also recognize the Whataburger All-North Texas Team.

Fans can vote at: LandryAward.com.

Five finalists will be announced in November with 2012's official winner named Dec. 6 at a ceremony at the Communities Foundation of Texas.

Missimo tabbed all-Big Ten

At Prestonwood Christian Academy, Cole Missimo was no stranger to achievements on the pitch.

That success has translated to Northwestern.

In his first season with the Wildcats, Missimo has been named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. The former Lion played in all 19 matches this year, starting six in the midfield, and had the second-most minutes played on the team by a freshman.

Blalock seeking trip to Pro Bowl

Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman Justin Blalock, a Plano East alum, has been an important component to the team's 9-1 start.

Now, he is seeking a spot in the Pro Bowl.

Fans interested in supporting Blalock's cause can go to: nfl.com/probowl/ballot.

Blalock is listed in the NFC sub-category under offense and guard. The names are in alphabetical order, so Blalock is near the top. Voting closes in less than three weeks, but fans can vote as often as they want until then.

O'Day named all-UAA

Case Western Reserve sophomore forward Patrick O'Day, a Plano Senior alum, has been named to the All-University Association men's soccer team.

O'Day was an honorable mention pick.

The former Wildcat, last year's UAA Co-Rookie of the Year, ranked second on Case Western this season with nine points on four goals and an assist. In two college seasons, O'Day has totaled 40 points on 15 goals and 10 assists. He is tied for seventh in team history in goals and ranks ninth in points.

PCA, JPII players all-state

With the volleyball season complete, the end-of-year awards have started to pour in.

Prestonwood Christian Academy and John Paul II are among the honorees with both teams getting players onto the TAPPS 5A All-State Team.

The Lady Lions led the way following their trip to the state finals with senior Katie Staiger and junior Ashley Morgan both named first team all-state. Junior teammate Haley Wolken made the list as well, named as a second-team selection.

Joining Wolken on that squad was John Paul junior Jennifer Young, who helped the Lady Cardinals advance to regionals this season.

Buescher wins truck title

Plano native James Buescher didn't finish first Friday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway but no doubt enjoyed the biggest victory of the evening.

Despite placing 13th in the season finale race, Buescher was high enough to secure the outright NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship - his first in four full-time seasons.

"It wasn't pretty," Buescher said. "It was a little messy, but we did it. ... This is definitely the coolest thing I've ever done in racing."

Buescher's closest competition in the point standings was Timothy Peters, who finished eight on Friday and just six points behind Buescher overall.
