Wolverines improve to 3-0

The Wakeland boys basketball team is off to a quick start in 2012 after missing the playoffs last year.

The Wolverines have won all three games during the early season, including a 61-59 victory against McKinney on Monday that saw Cameron Walker pour in a team-high 12 points.

Walker became one of four Wakeland players in double figures for the game after Zol Singleton chipped in 11 and Josh Harris and Sam Schwietz added 10 apiece.

Wakeland had previously earned victories against HSAA (60-49) and Wylie (73-61) to kick off the new season.

The Wolverines were slated for a Tuesday home meeting against Frisco Lone Star, however, results were not available as of press time. Following the cross-town rivalry, Wakeland will host North Garland Tuesday night in a 7:30 contest.

Winter Games of Texas near

For the eighth year in a row, The Winter Games of Texas (the state’s largest multi-sport amateur competition) is coming to Collin County.

The event is set for Jan. 18-20, 2013.

Close to 4,000 athletes and 15,000 spectators, coaches, referees and volunteers are expected to participate in this year’s event, which features 13 different sports (basketball, Miracle League Bowling, fencing, figure skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, martial arts, soccer, swimming, volleyball, table tennis and the 2013 Texas State Weightlifting Championship, which is the latest addition to the annual slate of activities).

While most of the events are taking place in Frisco, the gymnastics portion of the competition will be Jan. 19-20 at ASI Gymnastics-Plano West (4051 Rosemeade Pkwy).

Those who medal in basketball, figure skating, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and table tennis advance to the 2013 State Games of America, which are July 31-August 4.

Landry Award nominations

For the third straight year, North Texas GMC Dealers will present the area’s top high school football player with The Landry Award.

The honor recognizes the Metroplex’s top high school player. The recipient will be chosen by a voting panel of former coaches and players, media members and local leaders. The Landry Award program will also recognize the Whataburger All-North Texas Team.

Fans can vote at: LandryAward.com.

Five finalists will be announced in November with 2012’s official winner named Dec. 6 at a ceremony at the Communities Foundation of Texas.

Hall of Honor nominations

Though the Allen ISD began enshrining people into its Hall of Honor when Eagle Stadium opened, the district is still seeking future nominees.

Candidates must be ex-athletes, employees, teams or supporters of AISD. They must have graduated from Allen at least 10 years ago and demonstrated good character throughout their post-high school athletic career. If a nominee is deceased, a representative of his/her family may accept the honor.

Nomination forms can be found at: allenisd.org.

Nominations should include as much detail as possible to help choose the best candidates. The selection committee will name recipients at an annual AISD Hall of Honor banquet.
