Success at KLB's Trinity Trash Bash Clean Up

Published: Monday, November 26, 2012 12:13 PM CST
Keep Lewisville Beautiful (KLB) celebrated its 21st annual citywide waterway cleanup Nov. 17 at Lake Park. The free event was held in conjunction with a regional effort Trinity Trash Bash waterway cleanup event, a collective effort of more than 33 local communities to keep our waterways clean. KLB partnered with the city of Lewisville, LLELA, T.R.E.E.S., Army Corps of Engineers, Upper Trinity Regional Water District and Kayak Power to help make the event as successful as it could be and help educate volunteers about waterway health and conservation.

KLB officials said 201 volunteers helped pick up more than 3,790 pounds of trash out of Lewisville creeks, streams, shoreline, canals and along the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. That's 1.9 TONS of trash cleaned out of local waterways. Several illegal dumping sites were also cleared.

Trophies for most trash collected for adult groups are as follows: The Lewisville Texan Journal team led by Steve Southwell won for adult large with more than 15 bags, and adult small went to EA engineering with more than eight bags. Most trash collected for youth large group went to LHS Student Council with more than 25 bags, and Girl Scout troop 3533 for youth small with 16 bags. "Most interesting item found" trophy went to LHS Student Council for an old boat spot light, found in a local creek by the Hedrick House. Other interesting dumped items included propane tanks, license plates, shopping carts, bathroom sink, and undergarments.
