Cross country: Flower Mound, Hebron jockey for top spots at Rick Neill Invitational

Published: Saturday, October 20, 2012 1:52 AM CDT
Lewisville ISD cross country teams got their final tune-ups before the District 5-5A Championships, which take place Oct. 27 at North Lakes Park in Denton, last Saturday when they took to the course at Lake Park in Lewisville for the annual Rick Neill Memorial Invitational.

Among the teams running in Lewisville were the Farmers, Flower Mound and Hebron.

"The meet went well," said Rory Durham, Lewisville head coach. "The course did fine and the weather was on our side. We got a lot of good responses from other coaches and we're hoping to continue to expand the meet in the future."

On the boys side, the Jaguars (40) just had enough to get past the Hawks (52) with the Farmers in seventh (187).

"It's usually a pretty fast course," said Andrew Cook, Flower Mound head coach. "On Saturday, though, there was about a 25-mile per hour wind and they were running right into it for the first mile. But overall, it was a fair course and I thought that was a nice break for our kids because they had been running tough courses. Even a course not as challenging like at The Colony, we were running in the mud."

Flower Mound earned the edge in girls action as well with the Lady Jaguars in first (31) followed by Hebron in second (51) and Lewisville in eighth (178).

"I thought our girls team did a much better job of packing it in together," Cook said. "That's something we've been working on and I thought our fourth and fifth girls stepped up and dropped their times and packed it in."

In addition to battling for first and second on both sides, Flower Mound and Hebron had runners competing for gold individually.

Flower Mound's Safiya-Hana Belbina (18:20.27) outpaced Hebron's Megan Montgomery (18:27.75) for gold in girls. However, Hebron's Robert Domanic (15:59.54) took the top spot in boys action ahead of Flower Mound's Wesley Ward (16:03.57). Kirsten Zeller and Brittany White were close to personal best times for the Lady Jaguars, while Zach Hamstra (fourth) continues to show improvement as he returns from an early-season injury.

"Our boys team did a solid job, too," Cook said. "I thought they ran their best meet of the year last week at the Nike South meet and now we're just looking for consistency from meet-to-meet. We're not going to knock it out of the park each week and when you get to state, it's not always about running your best times but about having everyone running well and on the same page."

While the Farmers didn't finish at the top of the standings, they did have 14-of-27 runners post personal best times.

"Our guys and girls are improving and that is all I can ask for," Durham said. "As the season has progressed, a majority of our runners have gotten better and that was our goal.

"We're in a very tough district for cross country and right now we can't be as concerned with earning medals but rather improving week-by-week. Next week at district, we'll let the cards fall and see what happens."

Marcus, meanwhile, continued to take care of business, sweeping first-place finishes at the Birdville Flyin Hawks Invitational at Tarrant County College in Hurst.

The Marauders (46) cruised past Paschal (140) and Justin Northwest (151), while the Lady Marauders (30) finished comfortably ahead of the Lady Texans (78) and Coppell (110).

Individually, Sydney Brown claimed a gold medal (17:14.11) ahead of teammate Madeline Reed (17:35.04) with silver. Logan Hendrix paced Marcus on the boys side in second (14:57.71) with Luke Hendrix in seventh (15:26.72). Rounding out the competitors on the girls side were Payton Brown in eighth (18:10.99), Emily Jeacock in ninth (18:32.57), Emma Blair in 10th (18:40.56) and Natalie Polei in 14th (18:45.50), Devon Cruz in 15th (18:46.22).

The rest of the boys included Evan Durrill in 12th (15:45.37), Adam Steele in 13th (15:48.77), Jacob Babbidge in 15th (15:51.19), Benjamin Reed in 17th (15:53.83) and Drew Guenther in 18th (15:56.57).
