12-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: Horn continues hot start

Published: Monday, December 3, 2012 6:39 PM CST
Horn has gotten out of the starting gates as well as anybody this year and that hot start continued over the weekend, as they won two of three games at the Bishop Lynch Knights of Columbus Classic.

Mesquite had a busy weekend with five games, winning two, at the Collin County Roundball Classic, while North Mesquite split four games at the Royse City Tournament.

The Jaguars, who are 9-3 overall, closed the event by emerging from a defensive struggle with a 31-28 win over Houston St. Agnes on Saturday.

Horn scored only 14 points in the first half but were hanging around with a 28-24 deficit through three quarters. That was the opening they needed, as they closed the game with a 7-0 run to pull out the win. Jada Underwood scored 14 points and Kristina Smith added eight.

The Jaguar defense had also been strong on Friday in a 46-25 victory over Ursuline. Horn actually found itself down by a point early on before using a 13-4 run to take a 26-18 into halftime.

The Jaguars kept up the defensive pressure, holding Ursuline to seven points in the second half and used a 15-3 spurt down the stretch to run away. Smith paced the offense with 17 points.

Horn's lone hiccup came on Thursday in the opener with a 55-34 loss to Flower Mound Marcus. Despite 15 points from Smith, the Jaguars fell into a 16-5 hole after one quarter and never could claw back into it.

The Skeeters posted a 2-3 record at the Collin County event, but remained above .500 on the year at 8-7 on Saturday with a 46-40 victory over McKinney Boyd.

The game was tied at halftime and stayed close throughout, but Mesquite was able to take a five-point lead in the third quarter and they made it stand up until the end. Mica-Curtis Wilson had 14 points to lead the Skeeters while Briana Caro and Viershanie Latham each added nine.

Mesquite dropped its other game on Saturday with a 57-51 loss to Sherman, despite 12 points from Latham. The Skeeters led for three quarters before Sherman answered with a 19-9 run in the fourth to steal the victory.

Mesquite also split a pair of games on Friday, defeating Frisco Wakeland and falling to McKinney.

The Skeeters opened the game with Wakeland on a 13-6 run and behind 18 points from Caro and 14 from Latham, they held on from there in a 49-42 victory.

Mesquite got off to a similarly hot start against McKinney, grabbing a 15-6 advantage, but the Lions roared back to take a 35-31 lead through three quarters and held off a late Skeeter charge.

In the opener, Mesquite battled perennial power Lincoln evenly through four quarters, but were blanked, 6-0, in the extra period in a 54-48 loss.

One of North Mesquite's highlights at the Royse City Tournament came on Saturday when they picked up a 47-45 victory over Paris North Lamar. Racheal Malone scored 10 points, with Taylor Carraway and Makqhuisha Carruth each adding nine.

Also on Saturday, North Mesquite (3-8) dropped a 46-36 decision to Forney. Behind 16 points from Carraway, the Stallions stayed within striking distance for much of the game before the Jackrabbits finally used an 11-5 spurt late to pull away.

On Friday, North Mesquite got 12 points from Kierra Townsend but it was not enough, as Rockwall-Heath got a 25-8 run in the second quarter and that was the difference in a 59-42 victory.

In the opener, the Stallions topped Little Elm, 46-42. Three players were in double figures, with Carraway scoring 15 points and Malone and Carruth adding 14 and 10 points, respectively.
