10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: Wranglers suffer tough finish to GISD Tournament

Published: Monday, December 3, 2012 6:41 PM CST
West Mesquite got off to a strong start to the GISD Curtis Culwell Invitational with a pair of victories, but that did not carry over into success on the final day, as it dropped its final two games on Saturday.

The Wranglers (8-6) were unable to keep up with DeSoto in a 73-48 defeat in the teams' second meeting this season.

West Mesquite found themselves down 41-24 after the Eagles ripped off a 16-7 run in the second quarter and they could never forge a serious charge in the second half. Alexus Bertrand scored 14 points and Regina Garrett added 10 for the Wranglers.

West Mesquite had battled from behind against Plano East from the start, and while it made a rally, it fell short in a 63-57 loss. The Wranglers trailed 37-28 at halftime but were able to get back to within three heading to the fourth before the Panthers regained control down the stretch.

Claudia Price led a group of three players in double figures with 15 points. Desirae Mitchell scored 13 while Tamia Cunigan added 12.

The first two days were far better for West Mesquite, including a 64-40 blowout of Rockwall-Heath on Friday. Bertand scored 20 points and Price had 19 as they used a 15-5 run in the second quarter to take control and they never looked back.

In the opener, the Wranglers had a fight on their hands against 3A Princeton, but survived with a 60-57 win. West Mesquite actually found itself down by seven at halftime before using a 14-6 run in the third to take the lead. Price led all scorers with 22 points.

Poteet fell to Ennis on Friday in a 47-36 loss at the Ennis Tournament. The Pirates fell behind by eight early but used a 12-5 run to close the gap. But the host team had another spurt in it to start the third quarter and this time, Poteet did not have an answer.

Shyari Cheathem had 15 points and Andrea Dyer added 10 for the Pirates, who had won their tournament opener on Thursday against Pearce, 46-36.
