Veterans helped through Honor Flight DFW

Published: Wednesday, December 5, 2012 2:48 PM CST
Honor Flight DFW is a passion of Mrs. Texas International Rachel Hedstrom.

A project that honors veterans of World War II, Honor Flight DFW’s mission is to fly Veterans of World War II from the North Texas area to Washington D.C. to experience the World War II memorial built in their honor.

In her attempt to promote the mission, Hedstrom sought the counsel and help of her long-time friend and Plano businessman Craig Keeland. He agreed to help pass the word and made a substantial donation of $10,000 which will all allow 10 North Texas veterans to make the trip to the memorial.

“Rachel shared with me her passion project, an organization that comes from deep in her heart,” Keeland said. “Rachel also shared with me that the average age of these veterans is 91. So time is a big issue.”

It costs $1,000 per veteran and there are more than 400 North Texas veterans on the waiting list for the two-day, all expenses paid trip.

Keeland’s family goes back five generations in Texas. His ancestors served in the military, going back to fighting with Sam Houston. As a life-long resident of Dallas and Plano, Keeland reached out to friends to inspire them to send veterans to see their memorial.

“It is important tome to honor the memories of generations of my family, along with everyone who have served our country,” Keeland said. “And I want to encourage others to honor their family members from The Greatest Generation. I hope others will make the commitment and contribute to Honor Flight DFW in increments of $1,000 so our veterans can know how proud and thankful we are to them for their service.”

Keeland is an entrepreneur whose life’s mission is “leading Others to Better Health.” His accomplishes this by marketing whole food puree products through his Plano-based CK Companies. One of the CK Companies sells a product called “Whole 5” which debuted in February 2011 and is carried by more than 600 grocery stores in the United States.
