10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Poteet holds off Kaufman for non-district win
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Poteet has gotten off to a slow start to the season, but with the 10-4A season right around the corner, the Pirates are hoping to build some momentum for the start of district play
Poteet took a step in the right direction on Tuesday as it staved off a late comeback attempt by Kaufman for a 45-41 victory.
The Pirates were powered by Shyari Cheathem, who had a game high 24 points. Brooke Bush and Kyla Nelson each added six points.
But Kaufman was not done, scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter, but the Pirates had enough to hold on until the end.
Poteet will have one final tune-up for district play when it meets Fort Worth Southwest on Friday.
West Mesquite (10-4), which was off on Tuesday, will play at Ursuline on Friday.
The road to the district title then begins on Tuesday with the start of 10-4A play.
The Wranglers, who have won at least a share of the district crown in seven consecutive seasons, will open their title defense at Carrollton Creekview.
The Pirates, meanwhile, will be at home to take on Carrollton Newman Smith.
