Two students were arrested at Vines High School in Plano Friday after a fight broke out as a result of an escalating "Twitter war," Plano police said Monday.
The trouble started Wednesday when an argument broke out at the school between two female students. The disagreement then began to unfold on social media site Twitter, where several other students became involved in the dispute, Plano PD Spokesman Officer David Tilley said Monday.
Police were called to the school Friday after several students became involved in a fight related to the disagreement, Tilley said. One male student and one female student, both juveniles, were arrested for assault at the scene.
Some additional officers remained at the scene until the end of school Friday, Tilley said. Two off-duty police officers were hired by the district to remain at the school Monday in response to Friday's incident and a separate altercation that occurred Wednesday, a letter sent to Vines parents by Vines Principal Shauna Koehne reads.
Tilley recommended parents keep a close eye on their children's activity on Twitter and other social media websites, adding that parents should ask their children for their Twitter account handles since users normally do not use their first and last names.
"I see some stuff posted on Twitter, by kids, that I'm just appalled at," Tilley said.
No injuries were reported as a result of Friday's altercation. No additional incidents have been reported at the school since the arrests, Tilley said.
No weapons were used or displayed by students or police officers during Friday's incident, Koehne's letter states.
