Girls basketball: Lady Marauders cool off Allen, 48-35

FLOWER MOUND - With two teams looking to get out in transition, rebounding was a vital aspect in Friday's non-district contest between Marcus and Allen.

Nine boards apiece from Ashley James and Jenna Davis slanted the edge in Marcus' favor and the Lady Marauders (12-4) carried the advantage to a 48-35 victory over the Lady Eagles (13-4).

Marcus' patented defense also limited the Lady Eagles to 27 percent shooting from the field while the Lady Marauders connected at a 35 percent clip.

Carroll Roll: Dragons sweep TISCA field for third straight year

Published: Monday, November 19, 2012 7:49 PM CST
THE COLONY -- It's been an emotional week for Southlake Carroll swim.

A mere six days removed from the passing of Carroll swimmer Colin Giddings, the Dragons rallied Saturday from the Lewisville ISD Aquatic Center for what is becoming an annual program tradition: a TISCA North Zone Meet sweep.

"After what happened with our young swimmer Colin Giddings, this was an amazing and miraculous weekend," said Kevin Murphy, Carroll head coach. "We couldn't design it any better and this really shows the courage of our team."

The Dragons took the pool by force, more than doubling up their closest challengers on both sides. In victory, the Lady Dragons totaled 518 points compared to Highland Park's 196 while the boys posted 411 to Plano Senior's 160.

Carroll's depth told the story with the Dragons qualifying at least one swimmer for the championship heat in all 22 events.

The Dragons finished first in 11 while placing in the top three of 19.

"We tried to take our best swimmers and spread them out, so everybody has an opportunity," Murphy said. "We didn't get everything done that we wanted to this weekend but the kids stepped up and did a great job."

Six of those top finishes belonged to the Carroll boys, three from both Jonathan Roberts and John Remetta. Roberts took first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.94) while Remetta claimed the top spot in the 200 individual medley (1:53.10). The duo teamed up for first in the 200 medley and 400 free relays, with Jake Tovey and Jacob Elieson joining the pair in the 200 (1:36.73) and Tovey and Austin Nguyenphu contributing in the 400 (3:10.88).

Bryce Kelin added first in the 1-meter dive (530.85) and Connor Dobbs did the same in the 500 free (4:40.04).

Carroll's girls squad wasn't far behind, garnering first-place finishes from Emily Gibson in the 100 fly (56.02), Emily Zapinski in the 500 free (4:55.24), plus the 200 free (Gibson, Zapinski, Lindsay Schultz and Casey Rose, 1:37.45) and 400 free relays (Schultz, Zapinski, Ashlin Anderson and Alexa Baran, 3:34.30).

While the Dragons' depth proved too tall a task for any of the 67 schools on hand to overcome, plenty of others found success in the annual midseason meet.

Among those was Plano, which placed second in the boys draw after taking 15th overall one year ago.

The Wildcats' crowning achievement was a first-place run in the 200 free relay (1:27.78), led by Kyle Whieldon, Jay Friestad, Carter Constien and Duncan Lee. Whieldon's day wasn't done, finishing second in the 50 free (21.74) and third in the 100 free (47.16). Kendra Kieser took third in the 1-meter dive (398.80) to pace the Lady Wildcats.

"We swam really well today," said Philip Wiggins, Plano head coach. "The first day is always tough because there are 900 kids here and it's so fast. We're fortunate in that our kids always seem to swim better on that second day."

Close by was district bunkmate Allen, which, despite placing third (177) for girls and 11th for boys (101), combined for the fourth-highest point total (278) overall.

That balance was led by Thomas Kim, who took first in the 100 breaststroke (57.82) and third in the 200 IM (1:55.71). The Lady Eagles received a third-place swim from Sarah Vinezeano in the 100 fly (56.98), who also swam the lead leg of Allen's 400 free relay squad of Sofie Underdahl, Jennifer Brennecke and Gillian Wagner and also took third (3:37.17).

Similar team balance was on display from Flower Mound, whose boys finished fourth (136) and seventh on the girls side (112). Jenna Beaury was the lone Jaguar to break into the top three, taking second in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.32).

That finish was replicated on the boys side by Plano East's Nicolas Bergstein, who swam a 58.08 for second in the 100 breaststroke. The East boys finished fifth (129), also receiving a second-place swim from the 200 medley relay group of Phillip Chang, Bergstein, Alex Alfonso and Shane Kok (1:37.70).

While neither school broke into the top five overall, individual accolades were abound for Hebron and McKinney, specifically from the Hawks' Joshua Clothier and Lady Lions' Sammie Hashbarger.

Hashbarger, who amassed all 40 of McKinney's points, took first in the 200 free (1:48.93) and 100 free (50.74).

"I was really trying to win because I didn't last year," Hashbarger said. "I really felt like it was my time to shine. I feel like I'm in a good place right now and I only have room to improve."

Clothier helped the Hawks in their eventual 10th-place finish (107) by claiming first in the 50 free (20.90) and 100 free (45.91).

"I'm pretty pleased overall," Clothier said. "My coach has helped me with a lot of stroke work and I'm pleased with the training that we've put in."

Caroline Korst led Hebron's girls by taking first in the 100 backstroke (56.61).

Also on hand Saturday was Plano West, which featured Brian Waggoner taking third in the 50 free (21.85) to go along with a pair of third-place finishes in the boys and girls 200 free relays.
