Lewisville Fire Safety Clowns visit elementary students

Choo-choo, choo-choo said the A&R Railway 911 as it pulled into Degan Elementary School Thursday morning.
As "Ashes," "Radio" and "Squirt" set up camp in the train yard, students filed into the cafeteria to see what the commotion was about. The children quickly learned that the clowns were at their school to deliver a message.
"I'm Ashes...and I'm Radio," the clowns said.
"And we're the Boxcar Buddies. We ride the rails up and down and see the countryside. And where we stop, we teach kids ways that they can be safe," Ashes said.
During their stay at the school, Ashes and Radio, along with their iPad friend "Squirt" the fire hydrant, taught students all about fire safety. Students learned that smoke detectors should be checked once a month and batteries changed twice a year. They also learned to create a home escape plan that includes two exits from every room in their house (in most cases, a door and a window) and plan a meeting place for their families.
In the event of a fire emergency, the clowns taught students how smoke rises and that they should crawl low below the smoke to the nearest exit.
"You should check closed doors for heat with the back of your hand. If the door is hot, be prepared to go out your second way out by crawling low below the smoke (because that's where the good air is) over to the window, open the window, push out the screen and go right outside, right to your meeting place," Ashes said. "And you don't come back in until the firemen say you can."
Ashes and Radio also taught the students the proper way to call 911 and the information they should know before calling.
"You should know your name, address, and explain the emergency to the operator," the clowns said. "And, if you're calling from a cell phone, be sure to push the green button to make the call."
Finally, Ashes and Radio taught children how to react if their clothes catch on fire. Ashes quizzed Radio on the proper response, and Radio received help from Degan Elementary teachers. The three decided that in the event that clothes should catch on fire, you should stop, drop to the ground, cover your face and roll until the flames our out.
As their time at Degan Elementary came to a close, Ashes and Radio asked the students to pass on the lessons they learned to their families. Next, they will visit Creekside and Parkway elementary on Monday, Lakeland Elementary on Tuesday, Valley Ridge on Wednesday and finally Lewisville Elementary on Friday.
