Lewisville expands arts board responsibilities

Members of Lewisville's arts advisory board will now have additional responsibilities specifically where public art is concerned.
During Monday's Lewisville City Council meeting, members approved an ordinance that expanded the duties of the arts board. The additions include giving the board the responsibility to receive proposals if someone wants to propose public art. The board is also now responsible to review the proposals and make a recommendation to the council.
"Right now there's not a board that advises the council on performance art, installations or other public art," said Councilman Neil Ferguson when asking the city staff to review the board. "I am very satisfied that this board is now settled and established, but we've never given them the full scope of what they will be responsible for."
Funding for public art will continue to come from the hotel/motel tax.
The new duties of the arts board will go into effect at the end of October, but it will keep the same nine members. The guidelines for public art must be drafted by the arts board with the council's input.
The city council also approved a bid award to Robust Controls LLC in the amount of $59,750. The company will perform scheduled maintenance as well as work involving new control programs and equipment as new projects come up.
Council members also approved an agreement with Denton County to provide library services to all residents of Denton County. In exchange, the county will pay the city of Lewisville $80,260, based upon Lewisville's population per North Central Texas Council of Governments figures and a proportionate share of un-served Denton County residents.
City council members approved a variance to the city code allowing Bethel Dallas Church of Lewisville to have two temporary classrooms on the existing Champion Center property located at 2680 MacArthur Blvd. The center asked to have the temporary classrooms for no more than two years. The temporary classrooms must be used for church purposes only.
Council members approved an ordinance that amends the definition for the Old Town Entertainment District. The definition incorrectly defined the boundary; the ordinance corrects the error.
