Reconsider the Arts Center

My name is Veronica Joyce Cook. I have lived in Frisco, Texas since I was born in 1987. With a bitter-sweet heart, I've watched our small country town grow into a city that tops the charts as "The Best Place to Live in the U.S.A." Although the organic beauty once found driving down a 2-way Preston Road surrounded by fields, horses, and cattle rests fondly in my mind, I have come to embrace the freedoms and opportunities now offered by such diverse development.
After reading the Arts stories of your March 2nd paper, I feel frustrated and confused. The front page article explains how Frisco residents and council have decided that they are no longer interested in seeing the Arts Center of North Texas to completion. Personally, I have been excited for this project to happen for many years; since 2000 when my mother, Jennifer Wittstuck, worked so hard to build support for its predecessor, Symphonia Frisco. How can a city turn away from such a project, while in the very next article encourage our many young students to pursue their creative talents with art shows? What message does this send to them? "Yes, art is fun, but in the real world it's not worth supporting." Some of these children will grow up to be innovators in the way we view our world. Art is prevalent in every area of our lives. Whether you notice it or not, art shapes the way we feel, think, and behave. If Frisco, Allen, and Plano will come together and truly support the project rather than dragging it out and wasting the funds we've already spent, everyone will save time and money. Furthermore, when these children graduate high school, they will have a local place to show their talents and find support as they go on to achieve their dreams.
Frisco has always been about expanding and trying to bring out the best in our community. Live. Work. Play. Grow. From the displays in our grade-school hallways to the sculptures found on campus at Collin College to the inspired works dressing the grounds at Hall Office Park, Frisco holds a great wealth of creative culture. What is holding us back? If this is about the economy, we need to pick our heads out of the mud and see that there is a rainbow on the horizon. Stick it out through the hard times because when everything is beautiful again, we will be able to enjoy what we've accomplished. That's what my mom teaches me as I watch her progress through life. Beauty is so frequently overlooked when we have deadlines and bills to pay. I'm asking Frisco to reconsider their vote, reinvest in the Arts Center of North Texas project, and run with it for the sake of the children on page 2A of the Frisco Enterprise, March 2 edition.
