"Seize the day" is exactly what the founder at Carpe Diem envisioned for her school's students when she established the private preschool in Allen. To owner Ashley Murphree, that includes children understanding each person's role in a well-balanced society.

On that note, children at Carpe Diem recently began the holiday season by delivering more than 20 boxes of donated food staples to Allen Community Outreach. Murphree related it is an annual tradition of the school.

"Our curriculum incorporates experiences that help give the children the understanding that we are all community helpers," Murphree said. "Most schools teach lessons about community helpers, such as postal carriers, firefighters and police officers. We aim to not only bring to light the valuable contributions of these helpers, but also the contributions all citizens can make."

The children toured the food pantry and learned about weighing and stocking goods on the shelves. They also met with volunteers and staff who shared the mission of the ACO with the students.

"By delivering those food items, you helped enable families to cook their wonderful meals at home with their loved ones," Carpe Diem Director Julie Smith told the students.

The students at Carpe Diem will continue their education of learning how to be constructive citizens when they visit The Belmont at Twin Creeks retirement center on Dec. 14. They plan to deliver poinsettias and sing holiday carols for the residents.
