Coppell High School band heads for state competition

Published: Tuesday, October 30, 2012 12:26 PM CDT
The Coppell High School marching band was among four area bands to qualify for state competition at the area event last weekend at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

The other three bands were from Berkner Richardson, Rowlett and Duncanville. The state competition will take place on Nov. 6 at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio.

Qualifying for state competition is nothing new for Coppell. The CHS band has qualified every year for at least the last 10 years.

Coppell had qualified earlier in the month for regional. Last Saturday, they competed against scores of bands from all over East Texas and parts of Central Texas and North Texas.

Scott Mason, who has been the Coppell ISD band director for the past 22 years, said band competition in Texas is the hardest in the nation because of so many outstanding marching band programs in schools throughout the Lone Star state.

“I am extremely proud of the work and dedication of my students for the past several months,” Mason said. “Their work did not begin on the day of the competition. It began back in August during 110 degree weather and every day since then.”

The Coppell High School marching band can be seen and heard each Friday night at Cowboy football games, at the holiday parade scheduled for December and at concerts which are presented throughout the year.

Also, some band members will be performing at various veterans events in November.

Mason said, in addition to being proud of the band as a whole, he is also proud of the individual band members who qualify in solo competition and for All State band honors.

He said Coppell has the most students of any band in the state to receive All State honors.
