McDuff wins Senior CLASS Award
After leading Brown to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, senior defender Ryan McDuff has won the 2012 Senior CLASS Award for Division I men's soccer.
McDuff, who started for Plano Senior when it won the 2009 Class 5A State Title, grabbed the award for more than just his play on the pitch.
The award is given to the most outstanding senior in Division I men's soccer. To be eligible, McDuff needed notable achievements in four areas -- classroom, community, character and competition.
McDuff is a teaching assistant for multiple management classes and a peer advisor. McDuff also volunteers at Project GOAL, an organization that develops Rhode Island's disadvantaged youth through tutoring and soccer programs, and he works with Team Impact to match children facing life-threatening diseases with Brown athletic teams. McDuff established the Bruno Relays, an event that raised money for families who have relatives with disabilities, and he frequently works with the Providence Boys & Girls Club.
"I'm humbled to be named the Senior CLASS Award winner," McDuff said, "and honored to be included with such accomplished candidates."
Sidekicks set record
For all the years the Dallas Sidekicks have been around and all the championships they've won, the club never reeled off goals at as rapid a pace as they did Saturday at the AEC.
The Sidekicks beat the Texas Strikers, 21-1.
The 21 goals was a franchise record. The new marks didn't stop there as Dallas also recorded its fastest power-play goal (one second in) and most hat tricks (four: Franck Mbemba, Michael Uremovich, Shaun David, Robert Luevano).
The No. 11 jersey of David Doyle was retired at halftime. Doyle is the franchise's second-leading point scorer (665) behind current head coach Tatu.
Dallas (5-0) and Texas play again Dec. 29, only this time the Sidekicks head to Ford Arena in Beaumont.
Noesen ruled ineligible
With the 2013 World Junior Championship on the horizon, the U.S. will be without Plano native Stefan Noesen.
The U.S. National Junior candidate was ruled ineligible by the International Hockey Federation due to a 10-game suspension from the Ontario Hockey League. Noesen, who plays for the Plymouth Whalers, was suspended for a hit in a Dec. 8 game. The IIHF recognizes such suspensions and, because there will be seven games left in Noesen's suspension before the World Junior Championship, the Planoite is not eligible.
Participating countries include Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.S.

Figueroa returns to cage
For the second straight year, West Plano Crossfit-trained mixed martial artist Edwin Figueroa will be on the UFC's Super Bowl weekend card.
Figueroa returns to action for the first time in a year on Feb. 2 when he meets Francisco Rivera at UFC 156 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
A McKinney native, Figueroa competed just once in 2012 -- a split-decision victory over Alex Caceres at UFC 143 during which Caceres was penalized two points for kicks to the groin. The points proved decisive in the decision, with the win upping Figueroa to 2-1 in the UFC and 9-1 overall.
Figueroa was scheduled to fight in June at UFC on FX 4 against Ken Stone but was forced out due to injury.

Burkhead honors rolling in
Nebraska senior Rex Burkhead, a Plano Senior alum, is used to making history.
His latest opportunity came via the field and classroom as Burkhead was the 300th player from Nebraska to be named an Academic All-American.
Burkhead was a repeat first-team pick as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The former Wildcat noted it was "definitely a cool thing" last year when his portrait was added in the hallway outside the Huskers' academic center at Memorial Stadium.
"That was a goal when I came here," Burkhead said. "My parents were big on stressing academics growing up and always putting importance on it.
"It's definitely something I wanted to attain."
Burkhead is a history major with a 3.46 GPA. He also ranks No. 5 on the Huskers' all-time rushing chart (3,189 yards) heading into his final game, the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1 vs. Georgia.
Burkhead's week didn't stop there.
Having already been named to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, Burkhead was selected as a team captain during The Home Depot College Football Awards.
The Good Works Team will be recognized at the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2.
Jones, Noesen on National roster
USA Hockey recently unveiled its preliminary roster for the 2013 U.S. National Junior Team.
Seth Jones and Stefan Noesen made the cut.
The Planoites are among 27 attending camp today through Tuesday at Madison Square Garden Training Center. Another camp follows in Finland with the final 23-man roster set Dec. 23. The U.S. will compete at the International Hockey Federation World Juniors (Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Russia).
Jones, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound defenseman, is one of only three players on the roster yet to be taken in the NHL Draft as the potential No. 1 pick isn't eligible until 2013.
Noesen, a 6-foot-1, 206-pound forward, was selected in the first round of the 2011 NHL Draft (No. 21 overall) by the Ottawa Senators.
"We have a young, but talented group of players," said Jim Johannson, U.S. National Junior Team general manager. "There will be some tough choices, but that's a good problem to have."
