Dallas Christian's perfect season comes to a crashing halt

Published: Wednesday, December 5, 2012 4:12 PM CST
Dallas Christian's perfect season and quest for a ninth state championship was washed away on Saturday in a wave of mistakes.

The Chargers committed eight penalties and turned the ball over five times, two of which were returned for touchdowns as defending state champion Midland Christian rolled to a 48-7 victory in a TAPPS Division II state semifinal game at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene.

Dallas Christian (12-1) had won 10 games by double-digit margins during its winning streak, but found itself on the other side of the scoreboard against the Mustangs.

Midland Christian took an early lead with a field goal by Travis Causey and the defense then started its scoring act on a 42-yard interception return by Jarrod Koym that made it 10-0.

The Mustangs poured it on in the second quarter. Causey kicked his second field goal of the game and Mason McClendon threw a touchdown pass to Justin Fender to make it 20-0.

Chase Standard then intercepted a pass and took it back 62 yards for a touchdown and Jade Tamplin added a short scoring run to give them a commanding 34-0 lead at halftime.

The Chargers, who were held to less than 150 yards of offense, did get on the scoreboard when Alex Craig threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Dominique Weaver, but that is all Midland Christian would allow.

The Mustangs tacked on touchdown runs from Zac Bates and Elias Aguirre in the fourth quarter to provide the final margin and send them on to the state championship game against Houston Northland Christian on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Floyd Casey Stadium.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Dallas Christian slipped to 5-3 on the season with a 53-29 loss to Red oak on Tuesday.

The Chargers had a tough time getting out of the blocks and never recovered.

Dallas Christian scored only five points in the first quarter and trailed 31-11 at halftime. By the time the Charger offense got going in the fourth quarter, it was too little, too late.

Ashlan Miles scored 13 points and Hunter Cauley added 11, but the rest of the team combined for only five points.

Dallas Christian had dropped a 49-42 decision to Sunnyvale last Saturday on the final day of the Scurry-Rosser Tournament.

The Chargers got off to a good start and led 24-18 at halftime, but the Raiders countered with a 18-7 spurt in the third quarter and were able to hold on down the stretch.

Maddie England and Melanie Johnson led Dallas Christian with 13 points each.

The Chargers are scheduled to compete in the Fort Worth Trinity Valley Shootout on Thursday through Saturday before returning home to host Irving North Hills on Tuesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

The Charger boys basketball team is scheduled to compete in the Fort Worth Trinity Valley Shootout on Thursday through Saturday and then host Richardson Canyon Creek on Tuesday.
