10-4A BOYS BASKETBALL: Wranglers, Pirates improve to 2-0

West Mesquite and Poteet each started 2013 on the right foot as each picked up district victories on Thursday.
The Wranglers rallied past Highland Park for a 64-61 victory while the Pirates took down Carrollton Creekview, 44-36.
The two teams each improve to 2-0 in 10-4A and are tied for first place with Carrollton Newman Smith.
West Mesquite bided its time early on but came on strong to hand the Scots their second district loss in a row.
Highland Park had used a big second quarter to take a 28-22 lead into halftime, but the Wranglers got back to within four going to the fourth quarter and outscored the Scots 23-16 down the stretch.
Braylon Rayson had 26 points and Tyrone Davis added 14 to lead West Mesquite.
Poteet used a strong start and a good finish to polish off Creekview.
The Pirates opened the game on a 13-4 run only to watch that advantage get whittled down to a point at the end of three quarters.
But behind 23 points from Raffaele Gaines and 10 from Nathaniel Gaines, Poteet regained control in the fourth to hold on for the win.
The 10-4A teams will return to the court in less than 48 hours with a big match-up between two of the district leaders when West Mesquite travels to play Carrollton Newman Smith on Saturday.
Poteet will try to keep its perfect start intact, as well, as it hosts Terrell, which fell to 0-2 with a loss to Forney on Thursday.
