10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wranglers cruise to district-opening win

Published: Friday, December 14, 2012 7:48 PM CST
West Mesquite has won at least a share of the district championship in each of the last seven years.

The Wranglers understand that their success puts a big target on their chests each and every time they take the court.

In Tuesday's district opener, that hardly mattered.

West Mesquite was simply too much for Carrollton Creekview as it rolled to a 70-35 victory in the 10-4A opener for both teams.

The Wranglers, who are 11-5 overall, jumped on Creekview early with a 19-6 run to open the game.

The Mustangs did hang around and were only down by 11 at halftime, but West Mesquite put it away from there, pushing the advantage to 47-29 through three quarters and closing the game on a 23-6 spurt.

Alexus Bertrand had a big game for the Wranglers with 23 points, while Claudia Price scored 17 and Leah Hamilton added 10.

West Mesquite will return to action on Friday when it hosts Terrell, which dropped a 58-36 decision to North Forney in its district opener on Tuesday.

Poteet was not as fortunate, as it was unable to overcome a slow start in a 48-32 loss to Carrollton Newman Smith on Tuesday.

The Pirates (5-11) dug themselves an early hole as Newman Smith started the game on a 20-7 run.

It did not get much better from there, as Poteet scored only five points in the third quarter as the lead swelled to 46-22.

The Pirates did close the game on a 10-2 run, but it was far too little, too late.

Kelsey Stewart had 10 points to lead Poteet, while Shyari Cheathem added eight.

Poteet will look for its first district win on Friday when it plays on the road against Forney, which suffered a 74-24 loss to Highland Park in its 10-4A opener.
