Attempted murder-suicide leaves shooter dead, victim wounded in Providence Village

Published: Thursday, January 3, 2013 1:56 PM CST
A 50-year-old Providence Village resident killed himself and critically injured his 48-year-old wife Saturday night in an attempted murder-suicide.

According to information released by the Denton County Sheriff’s Office, deputies heard gun shots when they arrived at the man’s house in the 1300 block of Oakcrest Drive in Providence Village after a 911 dispatch. When the deputies entered the home, they found the body of the shooter and his injured wife. The man had shot his wife in the abdomen with a handgun before fatally shooting himself.

The victim was transported to Parkland Medical Center for treatment.

The 23-year-old mentally disabled daughter of the woman also lived at the residence but was not harmed in the shooting. She was placed in the custody of family members on Sunday morning, according to Tom Reedy, Denton County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

Providence Village is an incorporated community along U.S. 380 north of Little Elm.

Deputies were sent to the home where the shooting took place after receiving a 911 hang-up call at 11:17 p.m. on Saturday. The call was returned, and when no one answered the phone, deputies were dispatched. The daughter called back a few minutes later and gave her address to a dispatcher.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Saturday's shooting was the second such incident at Providence Village in as many months. In November, resident Christina Allen, 27, was shot and killed by her boyfriend, Nelson Rodriguez-Doran, who then killed himself.

The bodies were found in a house in the 10200 block of Lakeview Drive in Providence Village during a welfare checkup prompted when Allen did not show up for a scheduled meeting earlier in the day. The caller who alerted police of her absence told them they had helped Allen move out of a domestic disturbance situation and that while her car was in the driveway, no one answered the door. The caller also said a neighbor heard "thumps" and a door slamming that morning.

Providence Village resident Phil Johnson said he heard what sounded like gunshots around dawn the morning of the shooting coming from the direction of the home.

“I heard two shots, then a pause and then a third shot. Then nothing after that,” he said.

Sheriff's deputies entered the home that afternoon and found the bodies of Rodriguez-Doran and Allen in a bedroom, both with wounds from a semi-automatic pistol. The bodies were later transported to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office for identification and further investigation.

The sheriff's department had responded to a domestic disturbance call from Allen two days earlier. She told police she was trying to move out of the house she shared with Rodriguez-Doran, but he was preventing her from going in to retrieve her belongings. The responding officers reported that no assault had occurred and that both parties had separated to stay with friends until a later date, a release from the sheriff’s office stated.
