12-5A BOYS TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: Skeeters fall in championship game at Plano Wildcat Classic

Mesquite has been one of the hottest teams in the area in recent weeks.
The Skeeters entered last week's Plano Wildcat Classic having won nine out of their last 10 and that streak continued with three victories to earn them a spot in the championship game.
But Mesquite is not the only team playing at a high level of basketball and it ran into another one of those on Saturday night.
The Skeeters (12-8) dug themselves an immediate hole in falling behind 28-7 after one quarter. They countered with a 15-7 spurt in the second, but still trailed by nine at halftime.
The second half would get no better, though, as despite 14 points from Rashard Higgins, 13 from Javante Wilson and 12 by Alex Cooper, Richardson was able to maintain a comfortable advantage until the end.
Mesquite had some tough challenges in its road to the final.
In the opener, Wilson scored 22 points and Cooper added 20 as the Skeeters needed to outscore Frisco Heritage 26-14 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 64-59 win.
The second-round game was much easier, as Mesquite used a 27-7 run in the first half to take control and cruise to a 64-38 victory against Prosper. Cooper had 13 points and Jamarquez Scott added 10 to pace the offense.
In the semifinals, Mesquite met Jesuit for the third time this season. The teams split the first two contests and this one was once again close, as they went to the fourth quarter tied at 32-32.
But with Cooper, Higgins and Wilson combining for 39 points in the game, the Skeeters were able to do enough down the stretch to move on to the title game.
Mesquite, which has still won 12 of its last 14, will hope that carries over when it resumes district play at home against Tyler Lee on Wednesday, on the road at North Mesquite on Saturday and against Rockwall on Tuesday.
HORN
Horn had a couple of up-and-down days as it split four games at the Dallas ISD Coca-Cola Tournament on Thursday and Friday.
The Jaguars were knocked into the consolation bracket in their tournam ent-opening 51-44 loss to Woodrow Wilson.
Horn got 19 points from Anthony Sharp and 11 from Alan Hodge as it kept it close from start to finish. But Woodrow Wilson never let the Jaguar offense get untracked as it slowly edged away until the end.
The Horn offense did get going in a big way in the second game on Thursday as it rolled to a 77-41 win over W.T. White.
After scoring only 44 points in the first game, the Jaguars exploded for 33 points in the first quarter alone as they raced to a 52-22 halftime lead.
Horn spread the ball around on offense, with John McMiller scoring a team-high 18 points, Hodge tallying 13 and Sharp and Adrien Chevis each adding 12.
The Jaguars' hopes of a consolation championship ended early on Friday with a 51-42 loss to Wilmer-Hutchins. The Jaguars led by three at halftime, and were still tied going to the fourth before Hutchins reeled off a 15-6 run to close the game,
Sharp had 16 points to pace Horn.
The Jaguars did end the tournament on a high note, as Sharp and Jarrison Stewart each scored 13 points in a 57-50 win over Wylie.
Horn (5-11) has a district bye when the 12-5A slate starts up again on Wednesday, but will stay in action with a road game against Carrollton Ranchview. They will then play at Rockwall-Heath on Saturday before returning home to play Tyler Lee on Tuesday.
NORTH MESQUITE
A frustrating trend of late continued for North Mesquite on the first two days of the Plano Wildcat Classic last week.
The Stallions lost a pair of games by a combined total of five points on Thursday and Friday.
North Mesquite, which is 7-9, has only lost one game by more than 10 points and during its current five-game losing streak, four have come by three points or less.
The Stallions opened the tournament against Bishop Lynch and led 40-35 through three quarters until Lynch rallied to tie the score at 51-51 and force overtime.
Neither offense did much in the extra period, but North Mesquite managed only three points as it fell just short in a 57-54 loss.
Norman Alexander and Marcus Alonzo each scored 12 points to lead the Stallion offense.
North Mesquite was hoping for a different result on Friday and it used a stifling defensive effort to take a 24-12 through three quarters against Flower Mound Marcus.
But Marcus exploded in the fourth, outscoring the Stallions 22-8 to steal a 34-32 win.
Mike Williams and Ryan Bradley each had 10 points to provide a bulk of the scoring.
North Mesquite is hoping that those close losses start turning into wins as it resumes 12-5A play at Rockwall on Wednesday, at home against Mesquite on Saturday and at Longview on Tuesday.
