10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: West Mesquite gets back on the right track, Poteet wins second straight game

Published: Wednesday, January 9, 2013 2:30 PM CST
It is far too early to say West Mesquite was reeling, but after back-to-back district losses, the Wranglers needed to get back headed in the right direction.

Forney proved to be just the right remedy.

West Mesquite blanked the Jackrabbits 25-0 in the first quarter and never looked back en route to a 66-38 victory on Tuesday.

The Wranglers, who are ranked No. 17 in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A state poll, got 22 points from Alexus Bertrand and 11 from Tamia Culligan as they were able to coast after the early push.

West Mesquite is now 4-2 in 10-4A and in third place. Carrollton Newman Smith took over sole possession of first place at 6-0 with a win over Highland Park on Tuesday that dropped the Scots to 5-1.

While there is a lot of congestion at the top of the standings, Poteet let it be known it was not to be forgotten about.

The Pirates won their second game in a row to improve to 2-4 with a 41-31 victory over North Forney.

The teams were tied at 17-17 at halftime, but Poteet took control in the third quarter with a 10-3 run and were able to hold that lead until the end.

Shyari Cheathem paced the Pirates with 15 points, with Brooke Bush also in double figures with 11.

If Poteet hopes to stretch its winning streak to three, it will be a tough task, as it plays on the road at West Mesquite on Friday as the first half of the 10-4A season comes to a close.

The second half of the district slate will get started on Tuesday with the Wranglers hosting Carrollton Creekview and the Pirates playing on the road at Carrollton Newman Smith.

SATURDAY

For the first time in seven years, West Mesquite dropped back-to-back district games when it suffered a 52-48 loss to Carrollton Newman Smith on Saturday.

The Wranglers were in good position at halftime, having used a 14-6 run to take a 26-21 lead into the break.

But Newman Smith turned the tables in the third quarter, outscoring West Mesquite 18-10 to take a three-point lead and then was able to hold on in the fourth.

Claudia Price led the way for the Wranglers with 17 points.

Poteet finally broke its winless skid on Saturday with a 51-35 victory over Terrell. The Pirates relied on their defense in the first half, allowing them to open a 27-13 lead and they were able to maintain that cushion until the end.

Raehgan Shaw had 14 points, Cheathem scored 12 and Kyla Nelson added 10 for Poteet.

THURSDAY

During its streak of district championships, West Mesquite has shown the ability to rise to the occasion whenever a serious challenge has been presented.

But in one of the early showcase games of the 10-4A season, it was Highland Park that stole the show, racing to a huge early lead on its way to a 65-54 victory over the Wranglers last Thursday.

Highland Park came out firing, opening a 23-11 lead after one quarter. The Wranglers were unable to get untracked, as the Scot advantage swelled to 54-33 through three quarters.

West Mesquite made a strong surge to close the game, but it fell far short. Price had 20 points, while Culligan and Alexis Jordan each added 11 for the Wranglers.

At the other end of the standings, Poteet's rough start to the season continued with a 51-37 loss to Carrollton Creekview.

Poteet trailed by double digits after the first quarter but got back to within 22-16 at halftime. Creekview reestablished control in the second half, though, steadily pulling away for the win.

Cheathem shouldered the scoring load for the Pirates with 25 points but no other player had more than four.
