New approach to autism available in Southlake

Published: Sunday, January 13, 2013 1:05 AM CST
New Year! New You! The inspiration is everywhere. Yet for families coping with the often overwhelming challenges of autism, Asperger's syndrome and other developmental disorders, the promise of progress in 2013 requires more than a hopeful resolve.

To unlock the potential of individuals with autism demands an intensive, collaborative -- and playful -- approach now available in Southlake in the new, bright and colorful 5,000 square-foot ACI Learning Center located in the Cornerstone Business Park (2815 Exchange Blvd.) in Southlake, Texas.

With encouragement from families who realized breakthrough results from her distinctive approach, founder Nancy Champlin has opened five ACI Learning Centers across the Midwest since 2002, most recently in Southlake, Texas. As a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with more than 30 years experience, Champlin is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences on autism.

Autism now affects 1 in 88 children and is regarded as the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. Autism is characterized by social-interaction difficulties, communication challenges and a tendency to engage in repetitive behaviors.

ACI Learning Centers offer parents and families a comprehensive approach to teaching individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities, including Asperger syndrome, attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), challenging behaviors and language delays.

"ACI Learning Centers teach to the core deficits of autism," said Nancy Champlin, ACI Learning Centers' executive director and Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). "We specialize in teaching what others find most challenging -- and in my experience, the most valuable -- which is verbal communication, social interaction and play skills."

ACI Learning Centers specialize in applied behavior analysis (ABA) with an emphasis on verbal behavior therapy and a high priority on the value of play. "There's nothing more critical to the socialization process than play," Champlin said. ACI Learning Centers provide the optimum environment for learning that enables ACI Learning Centers' team of BCBAs and highly trained therapists to pair their approach to individual motivations, whether it's jumping on a trampoline or dancing to music. By pairing the function of language with an individual's unique motivations, ACI Learning Centers more effectively teach appropriate social and independent living skills.

ACI Learning Centers are family-friendly and encourage collaboration with parents to address individual needs. "We consider it a privilege to work closely with families to help them with their greatest needs, and in many cases, we understand that need is simply making it through the day," Champlin said. By partnering closely with families, ACI Learning Centers are better able to help individuals with autism reach their highest potential.
