Softball: Sweeps week: Hawks complete District 8-5A sweep of 7-5A

Published: Tuesday, May 1, 2012 4:15 PM CDT
During the past month, Hebron softball coach Staci Jackson and the Lady Hawks have bought into the theory of history repeating itself.

If the similarities to Hebron's run to the state tournament in 2010 continue to persist, so to will their belief.

When the Hawks reached state two seasons ago, they did so as the No. 4 seed from their district and opened the playoffs with a first-round win over No. 1-seeded Keller.

That's exactly how Hebron has begun the postseason this year, as the Hawks won their regular season finale last week to finish fourth and opened the playoffs Thursday and Friday with a convincing sweep of the top-seeded Lady Indians.

Hebron cruised past Keller Thursday in Game 1, 5-0, before outlasting the Lady Indians Friday, 6-3.

"In the first game, we just came out on fire," Jackson said. "We were hitting all around the lineup and did a good job in the field, too."

The Hawks have continued to ride the hot bat and arm of Heather Stearns, who picked up a win in the circle in addition to adding a two-run homer -- her 14th of the season.

"Heather is just playing outstanding," Jackson said. "She can dominate pitching and has been lights out lately. But she is also doing a great job at the plate. She is hitting and hitting for a lot of power, but she has also been very patient and has been taking the walks they are giving her and is waiting for good pitches to hit."

Hebron outhit Keller, 8-4.

While Stearns powered a homer Thursday, it was catcher Deja Talton who gave Hebron its early lead when she cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple.

The Hawks took advantage of a bases-loaded situation in Game 2 as well, with Chelsea Herndon driving in three with one of her two triples on the night off the top of the wall to break a 3-3 tie and put Hebron in front, 6-3.

The Hawks had taken a 3-0 lead early in the contest on the strength of a two-run single from Erinn Hill.

Keller scored two of its runs in the fourth inning on a Hebron error. For the game, the Hawks outhit the Lady Indians, 8-5.

With the sweep, Hebron advances to the area round where they will face L.D. Bell in a best-of-3 series. Game 1 takes place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Colleyville Heritage, with Game 2 Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. (if necessary) at Colleyville.

"Overall, we're playing with a lot of confidence right now," Jackson said. "I've really been impressed with our younger kids. I thought there might have been a little nervousness, but they've really stepped up and haven't been bothered by the pressure."
