The Frisco swimming and diving teams dominated their way through the District 9-4A swim meet in January.
Both teams had similar success Saturday at the Frisco ISD Natatorium during the 2011-12 regional swim meet.
“We thought we had the advantage going in,” said Bruce Eubanks, Frisco head coach, “but the kids really stepped up.”
The Lady Raccoons tallied a score of 468 to edge second-place Lovejoy by 255 points.
Prosper, Centennial and Wakeland rounded out the top five in the girls standings.
The Raccoons also lapped their competition in Saturday’s meet, finishing with 403 points.
McKinney and Wakeland came in a two-way tie for second place with 265 points while Prosper and Dallas Adams finished at fourth and fifth place with 168 and 165 points, respectively.
“Luckily they stepped up and did their job at regionals,” Eubanks said.
That success gave Frisco 16 state qualifiers, with nine Lady Raccoons leading the charge.
“We’ve got somebody in every event,” Eubanks said. “But we’re going to have to step up.”
For Frisco’s dominance in Saturday’s meet, coaches Mandy Moore and Bruce Eubanks were named boys and girls coaches of the year in both diving and swimming, sweeping all four categories.
“It was a great meet for [Frisco],” Eubanks said. “It really was.”
Frisco’s Lauren Dehls was named girls athlete of the meet in diving while Liberty’s Matthew Phillip earned the honor on the boys side.
McKinney’s Sammie Hashbarger was honored as the girls athlete of the meet while Frisco’s Corey Nix took the same honor in the boys event.
Nix had a big day, including first-place finishes in several events and also several new records.
“[Nix] had a phenomenal meet,” Eubanks said. “He set several records that would have been state records if it came in the state meet.”
In the 100-yard freestyle, Nix led all swimmers with a record time of 45.20, finishing ahead of second-place finisher, Zachary Fugina of Centennial. Fugina finished with a time of 47.31.
The girls 200-yard medley relay team of Ryann Lawley, Bailey Finkelstein, Bethany Crocker and Allie Walsh began the meet with a first-place finish after putting up a time of 1:51.26.
The male counterparts for Frisco proceeded to grab a first-place finish in the same event with the team of Radu Prunoiu, Ben Maxwell, Matt Brigadier and Trent Sandwisch posting a time of 1:38.64.
Wakeland’s team of Chase Garrott, Brayden Seal, Zachary Kline and Liam Garrott took second after finishing in 1:38.87.
In the girls one-meter diving, Dehls took top honors with a score of 334.10. Ashleigh Dehls finished in second place after earning a score of 304.50.
The boys one-meter diving saw Liberty’s Phillipp take first place after posting a 383.90. He was joined by Frisco’s Mitchell Larios, who earned second place in the event.
The swimmers and divers that qualified for the state meet will compete in Austin next Friday and Saturday, with the finals set for 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
“Anything can happen,” Eubanks said. “I think our kids are going to be ready.”
With several teams throughout the state bringing more swimmers and divers to the state meet than Frisco, Eubanks said the team is shooting for a goal of its own.
“Our goal is to go down there and win a banner,” he said. “That would be great.”
The top five teams earn a banner and Eubanks thinks his girls and boys teams both have a shot at taking one home.
“I think our girls have a chance at finishing in the top three,” he said.
The preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, with both swimming and diving events taking place in Austin.
