Cheney, Keating announce bids for re-election on Frisco City Council

Published: Thursday, January 17, 2013 3:10 PM CST
Frisco City Council Members Jeff Cheney and John Keating have announced their respective bids for re-election to their current positions with the council.

Cheney, who represents Place 2 on the council and serves as mayor pro-tem, is seeking his third term. The real estate agent, known for running The Cheney Group, was first elected to the Frisco City Council in 2007.

"It has been an honor to serve Frisco residents these last few years," Cheney said in a statement. "I am proud to be part of the team that has accomplished so much, and I look forward to what the future holds."

If his campaign is successful, Cheney's re-election would mark his final consecutive term on the council, which has a limit of three consecutive terms. Council members can be elected again to the council after sitting out an election, however.

Cheney cited his work in helping keep Frisco's tax rates among the lowest in the region and his work in negotiating the closing of the Exide Technologies lead-acid battery recycling plant among several accomplishments during his tenure.

Prior to serving on the city council, Cheney spent six years on the Frisco Education Foundation's board and has served and volunteered for several other local charities and organizations.

A formal launch of his re-election campaign will take place 5:30-7 p.m. Jan. 28 at Pizzeria Testa, located at 8660 Church St.

Keating, who represents Place 4, is seeking his second term on the council, having won his seat in the 2010 municipal election.

The community volunteer and former senior counterintelligence agent for the U.S. Army said he will hold an official kick-off event 6-8 p.m. Feb. 11 at FC Dallas Stadium's River Club, located at 9200 World Cup Way.

"It has been an incredible honor to serve residents by improving our city and helping it weather the national economic crisis," he said in a statement. "Business is booming in Frisco, and with more jobs come more residents: housing starts are the highest today they've been since 2008, on a monthly average. This is a great time for Frisco, and we still have more to accomplish."

Keating added that continuing to ensure the city is a world-class destination while keeping low tax rates for its residents is of prime importance to him.

"Serving in Place 4, I will continue to balance those two equally important interests so that Frisco stays an award-winning city, attractive to employers, residents and visitors alike," he said.

Another area Keating cited as an issue he plans to continue to focus on is public safety and improving the city's infrastructure, including the upcoming Fire Station No. 8 in southeast Frisco.

Both council members will have to wait until Jan. 30 to formally file for re-election, as the formal filing period is from that date until March 1.

Frisco's municipal election will take place May 11. Place 2 and Place 4 are the only City Council positions that will be part of the election as Frisco staggers its council elections.
