Medical Center of Plano to see expansions

When the Medical Center of Plano was named a Level II Trauma Center in March 2011, the hospital was the first in Collin County and the third in the DFW area to carry such a distinction.

The Level II status -- which indicates the hospital has round-the-clock resources to deal with serious, life-threatening injuries -- expanded the hospital's service area as far north as southern Oklahoma, causing an influx of patients to the 427-bed acute care center.

"Our patient volumes have increased dramatically," said Ben Harris, the hospital's vice president of business development. "That has put us in a position where we require extra capacity to continue meeting the health care needs of Collin County and North Texas."

To address this demand, the hospital is initiating a $66 million expansion and renovation project. Construction will start in May and is anticipated to finish in late 2014.

Two new floors will be added to the hospital's emergency department, totaling more than 56,000 square feet. Sixty-eight new beds will be added for the hospital's neurosciences unit, and new diagnostic technology -- including a 3T MRI machine and electrophysiology and catheterization lab -- will be brought to the hospital.

The building will also see exterior updates, including covered parkways at all public entrances. All public areas will be renovated, including the south lobby and hospital cafeteria, which will have additional indoor and outdoor seating.

"Increasingly, we're caring for people who've traveled a considerable distance from home," Troy A. Villarreal, the hospital's chief executive officer, said in a press release. "With this renovation, we'll be able to offer these patients and other guests a physical environment that reflects the sophistication of the services we deliver, as well as provide more beds to accommodate our growing patient population."

Dr. Khang Tran, the hospital's chief medical officer, said the facility is currently at capacity and that the expansions are needed to continue to provide patients with a high level of medical care.

"It's been a rough flu season, and the need is high for us to get these additional beds to provide patients of Collin County and the North Texas area a place where they can be well cared for," he said.

The renovations will also see the patient registration area moved to the hospital's 15th Street entrance, and the administrative offices will be renovated and relocated.

The hospital's two new floors will primarily focus on the hospital's interventional neurology and comprehensive stroke programs, Harris said.

"The need in this community is so great that we anticipate these 68 new beds will fill up quickly after going online," said Harris said.
