11-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Rowlett stays undefeated, Sachse wraps up playoff berth

Published: Friday, January 25, 2013 10:04 PM CST
Rowlett moved to within one victory of a share of the district title on Friday with a dominating blowout of South Garland, while Sachse punched its postseason ticket with a rout of Garland.

The Eagles improved to 9-0 in 11-5A with a 81-55 victory over the Colonels.

Rowlett was nearly unstoppable in the first half. They started the game with a 20-8 run and then scored 30 points in the second period to open a 50-25 halftime lead.

Dominique Oliver scored 18 points to lead a quartet of Eagles in double figures. Taylor Dupuy had 14 points, Taylee Alexander scored 11 and Courtney Fine chipped in with 10.

The Mustangs could have jeopardized their fourth-place standing with a loss on Friday but they were never in serious trouble in a 67-25 win over Garland.

Sachse led by four after one quarter and then blew the game open with a 23-2 run in the second period. The Mustangs kept the pressure on, closing the game on a 19-6 spurt to put it away.

Nekiya Jackson had 14 points, Leah Crouse tallied 11 and Monica Dorsey and Moriah Reed each added 10 for Sachse, who moved to 6-4 in 11-5A.

There are still two weeks left in the regular season, but the district playoff teams are set with Rowlett, Naaman Forest, Lakeview and Sachse.

While the postseason field is determined, there is still seeding to play for.

The Eagles will clinch sole possession of the district championship and the top seed in the playoffs with a victory on Tuesday against Naaman Forest.

Even with a loss, Rowlett will be the No. 1 seed if it wins its final two games against North Garland next Friday and Lakeview on Feb. 5.

The Mustangs are in fourth place, but both the second-place Rangers and third-place Patriots are within striking distance.

Sachse has a bye on Tuesday but then will be favored next Friday against South Garland before a potentially huge game against Naaman Forest in the regular season finale on Feb. 5.
