North Mesquite graduate Brown realizes Super Bowl dream

It is every NFL player's dream to play in the Super Bowl, but it is one that only a few get to realize.

After coming up just short a year ago, North Mesquite graduate and San Francisco 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown seized his chance last Sunday when his team rallied for a 28-24 victory over Atlanta in the NFC championship game.

San Francisco will meet Baltimore in Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. (CST) at the Superdome in New Orleans.

GIRLS SOCCER: Horn continues hot start

Published: Saturday, January 26, 2013 7:59 PM CST
It has been smooth sailing thus far for the Horn girls soccer team.

The Jaguars improved to 8-1-1 on the young season with a 2-0 victory over Berkner on Friday.

Horn did all its damage early on, starting with Brooke Hill's unassisted goal in the ninth minute to grab an early 1-0 lead. The Jaguars then made it 2-0 in the 16th minute when Liz Campos assisted on a score by Arianna Dunsworth.

Poteet also picked up a non-district victory on Friday, knocking off crosstown rival Mesquite, 2-0.

The Pirates, who improved to 5-4-1, got goals from Kaylah Hunter and Saphara Zavala and the defense did the rest.

West Mesquite split four games at the Gainesville Big Red Classic on Thursday through Saturday.

The Wranglers ended on a sour note with a pair of losses on Saturday. Emily Juarez scored the lone goal in a 3-1 loss to Frisco Lone Star, and West Mesquite also dropped a 2-0 decision to Mabank.

Things went much better on the first two days. The Wranglers got a pair of goals from Juarez in a 2-1 win over Sherman on Thursday in the opener.

West Mesquite busted out offensively on Friday, as Alexandra Leiva scored twice and Juarez, Diana Loperena, Aileen Nunez and Jennifer Rodriguez added goals in a 6-0 blanking of Paris.

Rowlett had opened the Duncanville Kickoff Classic with a pair of victories. Grayson Byrd had a hat trick, Haley Rodriguez scored twice and Vivian Beltran added a goal in a 6-1 win against Granbury on Friday.

The Eagles had been coming off a 3-1 victory over South Grand Prairie, getting two goals from Rodriguez and another from Byrd.

Sachse improved to 4-2-1 in non-district play on Friday, as Cyera Hinteen led the way with a hat trick in a 3-0 win over Pearce.
